I worked at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

Nice benefits, including three weeks off per year and good health benefits. But, lots of old, unhappy people work at UC Berkeley.

    Cons

Lack of upward mobility. You'll need to be cut throat to stand out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to value it's workers more and offer increases in pay based on positive work reviews since incomes have stagnated for far too long and it's unaffordable to live in the Bay Area on UC Berkeley salaries

    Recommends
    Negative Outlook

  2. If you're in the right department you'll work with the most empathetic, wonderful, friendliest people on the planet.

I have been working at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule with a people first attitude. Very good benefits (talk to HR to find the best plan).

    Cons

Working in research can sometimes mean long, grueling hours to meet deadlines. Not much room to move up, internally, in certain fields.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bear buy (purchasing system) needs work. Placing an order for specialty equipment and not having it processed until 6 months later? That is whack.

I worked at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

Personal growth, promotions, benefits, have time for social activites/fun stuff.

    Cons

Have to go find resources/ opportunities for yourself, have to be a go getter. As long as you could do that then you are fine

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make things a little bit more accessible for employees.

  7. Undergraduate TA in the CS Department

I have been working at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

-the staff in the CS Department are wonderful and very helpful
-all of my co-workers were very driven and excited to be there
    -tuition reimbursement!

    Cons

-I think that TAs are underpaid in general. The tuition reimbursement is really nice, but for the amount of effort that undergraduate TAs put in and the amount of time, I think that we should be paid more

  8. Stagnant and disappointing experience

I worked at University of California Berkeley full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - a sprinkle of co-workers who are passionate about education
    - good health coverage benefits
    - close access to Bart
    - knowledgeable co-workers
    - technology team is always working hard at perfecting processes and improving online courses

    Cons

    - higher management severely lacks emotional intelligence
    - employees who have been there for years are comfortable and crabby in their positions
    - no chances to advance
    - broken processes
    - no performance guides or outlines
    - no opportunities for salary bonuses or increases (except for bonus nomination, which is not always fair, as it is decided by a committee who have no direct knowledge of the nominees)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - value your employees, and show it, aside from empty compliments at staff meetings
    - improve/fix broken processes
    - stop overloading people and creating burnout
    - make technological training MANDATORY for older management

I have been working at University of California Berkeley

    Pros

world-class educational institution; it is easy to be motivated by the brilliant minds of all ages addressing complex social issues and knowledge all around you

    Cons

non-academic staff seem to exist somewhat separately from the rest of the institution; the middle-management is just as mired in work-place drama as anywhere else, perhaps more so as it is easier to hide problems without the business competition
