    Pros

As a student, it's incredibly convenient to have a part-time job at the school. Whether you're work-study or not, its great to make a few bucks in between your classes.

    Cons

Pay isn't the best, and the work can be quite dry (as a student employee).

    Pros

There are great opportunities to do research as a graduate student. There are also a lot of clubs on campus, many of which are also open to grad students.

    Cons

The campus is on the small side considering the number of students. So it can get crowded in between classes. Also the campus is on a hill, so it's not a very "bikable" place.

    Pros

Great boss and laid back work environment. Willingness to let you pick up additional hours when needed, because there is always work to do.

    Cons

All of the normal expectations of a professional painting position. Things can be tedious, inhaling fumes, etc.

    Pros

Great student job, you get to interact with the football coaches, players, and staff. Field access to home and away games. Routine helps you understand the job more and more.

    Cons

As a student it is hard to put in 40 hours a week during the school year. The "people upstairs" don't allow for much movement upwards after graduation.

    Pros

Berkeley has some of the best resources for doing research and the professors are world renowned. I worked in the Caldwell Lab as an undergrad researcher and am currently working on a stable isotope research project to map out the ecological food webs of octopuses found at Catalina Island. The position definitely gives you experience in dissections, freeze drying, and other various lab tech skills necessary to extract the data from the samples.

    Cons

I've had difficulty getting my own research project in the Caldwell Lab. The professors are so busy and have so many students that they won't always be available.

    Advice to Management

Definitely branch out and ask around for various positions! URAP is a great way to get started with research and it never hurts to shoot a professor an email to ask about their research!

    Pros

Incredible place to live, and wonderful place to go to school

    Cons

teaching experience depends a lot on the professor you work under.

  10. Graduate student experience

    Pros

Cal is an exciting, innovative university. The energy is palpable. There is always something going on. Students are engaged and passionate. (some) Professors are outstanding teachers and thinkers. I'm really proud of the diversity and educational equity efforts of the university, across all levels, spheres, and fields.

    Cons

Unfortunately, at Berkeley, the challenges of a public institution are real: budget cuts, raised tuitions (effecting which demographics now are prioritized), increased staff/employee responsibilities for same or less compensation, an increased dependency on graduate student instructors and adjuncts, etc. Also, because of the pressure on professors to produce, I think that in prioritizing their time, teaching (undergraduates) is neglected responsibility. Despite the high volume of intellectual activity, there is little exchange or collaboration, making Cal an isolating place to be, at least at the graduate level.

  11. Great place, great people

I worked at University of California Berkeley (More than a year)

    Pros

The people I was working with were really great and we got along really well. The hours were easy and so was the work.

    Cons

Not much to say here, just because everything was so flexible. I guess the one thing I can say is that the work would sometimes get too mundane.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. It's a great campus and great people. One piece of advice though: maybe a little less gossiping in front of the students.
