Current Employee - Worker Bee in Oakland, CA

    Pros

People are nice overall. Easy to leave work at work. Not too stressful.

    Cons

Typical state bureaucracy. Lots of rules and regulations, most of which are ignored. Duplicate work done at UCOP that is also done at each university. Can be very frustrating, especially if you have a strong work ethic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of dead wood and duplication of effort. Run the business side of the university like a business. Unions have WAY too much input on how the business is run.

    Pros

Can learn a lot, work with all culture but you have to have good supervisor.

    Cons

I was very unlucky to have a bad supervisor that cared for himself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is good to appreciate the employees contributions.

Current Employee - Programmer Analyst II in Oakland, CA

    Pros

-Flexibility in work arrangements, especially for those with families
    -Great benefits
-3 weeks of vacation to start, with at least 10 sick days and all national holidays per year

    Cons

-Lots and lots and lots of red tape
-Too much power given to academia at UC locations (bending over backwards to unreasonable levels to accommodate professors, further cultivating their counterproductive sense of entitlement)
-Many incompetent middle managers and employees, who are "promoted to their level of incompetence" instead of being let go. (It's almost impossible to be fired at UC, and people take advantage of this.)
-Departments here are huge fans of pointless (and expensive) meetings that waste time and force some employees to stay late to make up for missed work time
-Not much room for career growth. Many have been in the same position for decades.
-Low pay, relative to market levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold yourselves and your employees accountable for work performance (or lack thereof).

    Cons

not much advancement opp. and no reward for hard work

  6.

A once good place to work that has been overtaken by overpaid, terrible executive and senior management.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Oakland, CA

    Pros

Some people on the frontline doing actual work. Less and less of these numbers as new hires are pretty disappointing more often than not.

    Cons

Terrible communication in that misleading (at the minimum and outright lies in some cases) communication is constantly spewed. Way too top heavy. While underlings are told to make due with less, top management is over-compensated with the famliiar refrain that we need to pay more to get and retain the best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing really because nothing will change unless a President is hired that is truly commited to higher education, rather than personal compensation. Look no further than that while student tuition has doubled in the tenure of the current administration, the President makes far more in total compensation than any previous leader.

    Pros

Stability. Friendly environment. Good benefit package. Relatively low-stress environment with cordial employees.

    Cons

Less motivated atmosphere than other places I've worked. There was a limited potential for advancement.

Former Employee - Secretary in Oakland, CA

    Pros

    Decent pay and good benefits.

    Cons

It used to be a nice place to work years ago but I'm afraid that's changed and it's now become a political cesspool. There are managers to manage the managers and assistants to assist the assistants. It's just ridiculous. No promotions. No raises in pay. Snobby people to work with. Just go look for a job elsewhere and don't watse your time. Administration is incompetent and wasteful. Staff is not treated well. Layoffs abound.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read your own mission statement and try to remember what your organization is supposed to stand for.

Fantastic benefit/pension plan. Lots of vacation/holiday/sick days, good ability for life/work balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The mass reorgnizations, with no end date is demoralizing
