Current Employee – been working at University of Central Oklahoma full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Many dedicated colleagues who love the university, good university atmosphere with activities and events often, free fitness center membership, free parking, tuition benefit, new president hopefully will make some good changes.
Cons – Bureaucratic, IT department gets in the way of things, the leadership team is out of touch, yes people are valued while those that question things are not, promotions seem random and are based on who you are friends with rather than true skill or ability, there is a lot of administrative bloat and some people are working really hard while others barely work.
Advice to Senior Management – The new merit program is a good start. Shake up who you appoint to task forces and committees. Listen to the people who are not saying yes; they may have good reasons, put more resources and/or better management in charge of IT because they are a drain on productivity and innovation.

Former Employee – worked at University of Central Oklahoma
Pros – UCO is a great institution for higher education. You can actually be proud of the product your taking to students.
Cons – Low salary. Travel. competency of management. At the end of the day it's an entry level position.
Advice to Senior Management – Although it's higher education - run the department like it is a business. You're employees will appreciate that they are taken seriously and we are truly looking forward to advancing our objectives. Fire some people.

Former Employee – worked at University of Central Oklahoma
Pros – -Great people and supervisors
-For the most part the work enviornment was consistently positive
-Students
-UCO has great vacation time for holidays
Cons – -As with any organiztion, sometimes communication between departments needed improvement
-Sometimes decision making among upper-administration needed to be more firm
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to "brand" the University of Central Oklahoma as "Central" so to give it more recognition and notarity in the state

Current Employee – been working at University of Central Oklahoma
Pros – As a lecturer at UCO, I teach without a PhD. So while the institution declares itself a primarily teaching institution, I am not evaluated based on my teaching but instead on my research, which is next to impossible to complete without a PhD. You can see where this is going…while I work hard, have positive student reviews and have positive outcomes on teaching, I’m passed over for promotions, not eligible for merit bonuses, and in general have no opportunities for advancements while faculty with PhD’s get tenure, are allowed to teach fewer students (i.e., work less) and make up to three times my salary. Ok, this is the system in higher education, but as “teaching” institution and not a “research” institution it shouldn’t be this way.
Ok, now on to the positives. There are lots of things going for this school including a progressive management team, an environmental ethic, a desire to focus on leadership and civic engagement and other things to make it a good place to work. In fact, if I ever had any hope of a promotion, I wouldn’t be quitting, but after seven years and no room to grow, I’ve decided to move on. The upper leaders (President, Provost, etc) of the school have really impressed me but the system is stacked against someone with only a master’s degree so I’m out looking for a job.
Cons – Promotions are not really merit based for faculty, more so on education completed.
Advice to Senior Management – Value outcomes more so than process.
