excellent experience in learning your field. It is also very easy to network and get to know people in your office.

    Research Associate (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsI love the hours, loved my colleagues. I got a change early on to test out my skills and to figure out exactly where I fit in the company.

ConsThe pay is the worst. It takes about 3 years to really see an increase in your pay. That was something I was expecting. Also, it not that easy to move up the chain.

    Flexible, friendly work environment

    Circulation Assistant (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThis review is for the Circulation Department at Regenstein Library
    Generous salary
    Flexibility in scheduling
    Understanding and friendly management
    Professional but relaxed environment

ConsNot really a resume booster, but it is a great way to make money while still having plenty of time to be a full-time student.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy only suggestion would be to change the scheduling system, my weekly schedule often looked like a bunch of shifts randomly thrown together, for instance working noon-2, 2:30-4, and 8-10 on a Sunday.

Being an RA really pays off

    Assistant Resident Head (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsGreat benefits, residents love you. The Housing System as a whole is well set up so that each House is its own autonomous unit, so you're responsible for your residents only most of the time. Houses are really close-knit.

ConsIt can be a lot to manage on top of schoolwork. Emergencies can happen at any time, and you have to be available.

The work environment is nice and ample scope to focus on personal research work.

    Graduate Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsThe university gives a quarter off (out of 3 quarters) with pay to focus on research. If you're TA in a rich department, you might get graders for grading the homeworks and thus you have less workload.

ConsThe medical they offer through United Health insurance is a very shitty one. It's expensive and still not very helpful for poor graduate students. The deductible amount is around $250 and after that it's 10% copay. And as a bonus, we get taxed on the health insurance premium because the students have to pay the entire insurance premium at the beginning of each quarter and the University reimburses the amount through the monthly paychecks.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe university should directly pay the student's health care premium so that the student doesn't have the double burden of paying a hefty amount in the beginning of each quarter and also getting taxed on the amount.

ProsBeing at on of the top ten research oriented institutes

ConsNot to much resources for postdocs who do not succeed in getting an academic job
