I have been working at University of Chicago full-time

    Pros

This is a world class university, especially in my area. Generally, there are lots of opportunities to meet brilliant colleagues and to collaborate. Critical thinking is especially strong at this university: no assumption will be left unquestioned.

    Cons

This is a world class university. That means a lot of very competitive people, some of whom are ready to use pretty unsavory tactics to stay on top.

I worked at University of Chicago

    Pros

There are always many open positions in the IT dept due to the constant revolving door of personnel. It's a good place to get some skills and then move on. Looks good on your resume.

    Cons

IT management and structure is constantly changing with no clear strategy. Positions and people are re-organized based on the changing whims of the persnickety CIO and the executive staff she enables. Favoritism, nepotism and the "good old girl" mentality is rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

University president needs to clean house starting with CIO and all the VP's. Restructure the dept based on a career progression path to give people something to work and stay for. Problem is Zimmer (President/CEO) has been preoccupied with his divorce after having an affair with a university employee.
