The benefits are great, but pay no attention to the job description 'cause that's not what you will be doing.

I have been working at University of Cincinnati full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are great, especially if you or a family member want free tuition.

    Cons

Job descriptions are vague and positions and departments get changed without input from employees and no regard is given to what you were hired to do or your skill set...take it or leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more honest about the jobs description. Respect employees. You will get more out of an employee who feels acknowledged and appreciated.

I have been working at University of Cincinnati full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Diverse, urban, tolerant in a very conservative city. An oasis in the middle of the city in this regard.

Tuition remission, ability to take courses and advance knowledge and earn degree. People are friendly and the campus has a close knit feel even though it is a large, urban, research university. Current President Ono is hands on and student centered, raising the profile of UC. Retirement benefits are very solid. President Ono refused his own raise this year, allocating it to other programs at UC. Classy.

    Cons

Pay is low, but if you are earning a degree yourself, or sending a child to UC, it could be very worthwhile. Work environment is good, somewhat offsets the low pay, which for those who have Masters degrees, or even Bachelors degrees, really it is shameful. Turnover in some departments seems high, and this is most likely the factor. some shameful salaries even for education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees, salary and professional development.

    Pros

Learned about deadlines, useful communication skills, solving problems extremely quickly with very little trouble, and also got to work on major projects in collaboration with others

    Cons

Boss micromanaged way too much and had to have his fingers in every single detail about every single pie in the organization.

I have been working at University of Cincinnati full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I have obtained the following during my time at UC: Training, continuing education, leadership skills.
I have worked in medical sciences and there is great opportunity to learn from your peers and the professors.

    Cons

The biggest cons is interference of HR in determining salary for various positions. I feel I am underpaid for my skills. And my Professor was not able to pay me as high as she wanted to as HR did not allow it.
The department admin also interferes with everything that is ordered by different research groups, and gives you cheaper alternatives, even if you don't like them. Since the Professor is using their own allocated money to pay for this, this should not be an issue. however it is. The University HR seems very stingy.
Also, the health insurance benefits have dropped in what they used to provide initially when I started. It has become more expensive. You have to pay higher co-pays and you can not use you local pharmacy to fill regular prescriptions. The online pharmacy has a lot of issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please consider improving salaries according to qualifications.
Professors and bosses should have more say in determining salary, rather than HR.
There should be less interference from the department in what is ordered by a research group.
Also, health insurance benefits need to be greatly improved. The co-pays for doctor visits and medication refills are rising every year.
