Great pay (for a grad student), great benefits!

Graduate Assistant (Current Employee)
Storrs, CT

I have been working at University of Connecticut full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood working environment, great pay and benefits. I will take a pay cut if I adjuct here after I graduate.

ConsTop heavy UCONN continues the "industry-wide" trend of sliding into corporatism. Emphasis of athletics sometimes outweighs more pressing concerns. Also the student body is rather homogenous. Adjucts make more than many colleges around Connecticut but they should still pay more.

Advice to Senior ManagementResist the urge to keep building shiny new buildings. You should instead be keeping an eye on the impending demographic collapse that is coming. Also, the college is top-heavy. Otherwise a great place to work!

Great Experience for a Student

Student Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Storrs, CT

I have been working at University of Connecticut part-time for less than a year

ProsThe staff and faculty are very friendly, making the work environment great. Also, supervisors are very understanding when it comes to putting student responsibilities before work. I can't complain about compensation since it is above minimum wage.

ConsThe work can be tedious at times. Furthermore, sometimes there is no work to be done which can make the hours drag on.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more responsibilities to student workers.

Research Assistant in CS&E

Research Assistant (Current Employee)

I have been working at University of Connecticut part-time

ProsVery good academic environment. Great Benefits, even for graduate students.

ConsDownsized the health insurance for graduate students. They used to be treated as state employees, now they are under regular student insurance, which is much worse.

Graduate assistant (graduate course instructor)

Graduate Instructor (Current Employee)
Storrs, CT

I have been working at University of Connecticut full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI enjoy a lot of autonomy, the salary is fine, and faculties (especially my mentors) in my department are mostly nice and helpful.

ConsBad university system, comes with weird department policies. As gradate students, we are not supposed to spend so much time on teaching, but nobody cares a lot. Also, the new online student evaluation system is really confusing. Also, if your mentor/adviser/PI has no "political influence" in school or in department, you are almost dead. It is unfair sometimes.
