I worked at University of Essex part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The departments are small so it's easy to get to see people you need to speak to and most people are very helpful. There has been a lot of new development recently so many if the facilities are new ... Eg computer meeting areas in one of the many cafés on campus.

    Cons

It's not one of the top Academic institutions or in London so you can feel a bit out of touch with the front line. The small size can mean some facilities are lacking but research is geared towards the facilities they do have.

    Recommends

I worked at University of Essex as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    - university campus environment
    - close-knit community
    - generous employee packages
    - good transport links

    Cons

    - bureaucracy
    - many of the workers they are used to working at a public sector pace and therefore it can be hard to get things done quickly
    - the university suffers from a lack of communication between departments... and therefore it can be hard to utilise the benefits of so many intelligent individuals in one place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - create better communication between departments
    - encourage cross-department interactions
    - weed out the lazy and slow workers.

    Recommends

Former Contractor - Lecturer (Teaching Fellow) in Colchester, England (UK)

I worked at University of Essex as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very small centre campus and the building was for military use in the past.
Very good teaching quality in Economics, Government, Psychology & Linguitics.

    Cons

Very urgy central campus and the new shining chinese-stype toilet as the memorial theatre building. So, even the VC is inbelievably stupid. That's why Essex's ranking droped from around 30s to 50s in just less than a decade.
Very very rubbish Essex Business School. Not matter research, teaching, administration, marketing/promoting the new B-School....
    Student satisfaction is diving.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
