I worked at University of Guelph part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Teaching Assistant is a valuable experience for every graduate students.
The working atmosphere in University of Guelph is fantastic. Most of the professor are very nice. Guys from CUPE3913 fight for TA's right hardly, which I appreciate.
And TA benefits are quite good including high salaries and glasses benefits.

    Cons

I love University of Guelph that the TA work is so cool. I like it and there is no cons.

I worked at University of Guelph as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Lots of flexibility in the work to accommodate for educational commitments. Multiple opportunities for future employment and career advancement were presented to me throughout my employment and studies. Created long lasting professional relationships with professors and industry professionals. Helped make a difference in our community.

    Cons

Not any that I can think of. The overall experience was great!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thanks for the opportunities and I hope you continue to get students involved in research during the early years of their studies.

I have been working at University of Guelph

    Pros

Flexible time and generally very relaxed atmosphere. The infrastructure is acceptable. The professors are almost all the time in the office which makes interaction and short talk very convenient. The campus is small and compact (compared to other CA universities). The New Science Complex is a new building with nice cafeteria.

    Cons

The wet labs are not very well organized. The computational facilities are kind of short or non-existant. The only hope is SHARCNET HPC network.
The IT help is almost non-existent, even if one understands subject and specifically asks admins to steps A,B,C to be done.
Very small pay about 40K per year. The salaries are very low at UoG in general at all levels (except professors with tenure receiving ~130K/year).

Socially the people aggregate in groups that are sometimes hard to access. If part of a nice lab group, things are very good and pleasant. Witnessed only low interaction between labs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase interaction between labs via seminars and field trips. Unify salaries across departments as they vary drastically vary between say Computer Science and Physics Departments

I have been working at University of Guelph part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

everyone stay quite closed. Other staffs are really helpful when you got problems. Focus on personal development. Providing lots opportunities to engage all people. Feels like really expose to a dense network.

    Cons

Less diversified culture to experience since most people are from local. Less structured and institutionalized routines to follow.Sometimes feel a bit lost and nowhere to find guidelines. Intra-department communications are not quite there yet.

I have been working at University of Guelph part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexible hours, good work environment, friendly, decent pay, plenty of job options, organized shift scheduling, generally a good relationship between management and staff.

    Cons

Some managers do not treat their staff with the respect they deserve (ie. throwing them under the bus), may not always receive the number of hours you request.

I have been working at University of Guelph

    Pros

The environment is great, very inclusive and open. Some world class research goes on here.

    Cons

The bureaucracy, and the red tape can really slow progress down. Winter in Canada is never a pro.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more unified approach from all the different departments would definitely increase efficiency.
