A great place for graduate students

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at University of Guelph part-time for more than a year

ProsTeaching Assistant is a valuable experience for every graduate students.
The working atmosphere in University of Guelph is fantastic. Most of the professor are very nice. Guys from CUPE3913 fight for TA's right hardly, which I appreciate.
And TA benefits are quite good including high salaries and glasses benefits.

ConsI love University of Guelph that the TA work is so cool. I like it and there is no cons.

Life was great as a University of Guelph research assistant!

Research Assistant (Former Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at University of Guelph as a contractor for less than a year

ProsLots of flexibility in the work to accommodate for educational commitments. Multiple opportunities for future employment and career advancement were presented to me throughout my employment and studies. Created long lasting professional relationships with professors and industry professionals. Helped make a difference in our community.

ConsNot any that I can think of. The overall experience was great!

Advice to Senior ManagementThanks for the opportunities and I hope you continue to get students involved in research during the early years of their studies.

Nice and cozy environment to work !

Teaching and Research Assistant (Current Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I have been working at University of Guelph part-time for more than 3 years

Proseveryone stay quite closed. Other staffs are really helpful when you got problems. Focus on personal development. Providing lots opportunities to engage all people. Feels like really expose to a dense network.

ConsLess diversified culture to experience since most people are from local. Less structured and institutionalized routines to follow.Sometimes feel a bit lost and nowhere to find guidelines. Intra-department communications are not quite there yet.

Solid student jobs

Customer Service Representative (Current Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I have been working at University of Guelph part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFlexible hours, good work environment, friendly, decent pay, plenty of job options, organized shift scheduling, generally a good relationship between management and staff.

ConsSome managers do not treat their staff with the respect they deserve (ie. throwing them under the bus), may not always receive the number of hours you request.

Great Employer!

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
University of Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at University of Guelph as a contractor for more than a year

ProsLoved being a T.A., the professors I worked with were wonderful, and knowledegable. It was a very flexible job, and enjoyed working while I completed my Masters Degree.

ConsNone, loved working here. Tight deadlines for marking but other than that, great.

An easy going environment

IT Support (Former Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at University of Guelph as a contractor for more than a year

ProsWorking where I was, I was given the opportunity for flexible hours. As long as I showed up and completed my hours, there were no problems. I was able work late to make up for lost time due to appointments.

Even as a contracted employee, I received a benefits package that covered prescription medication and was able to use a voucher for new eye wear.

The pay was wasn't amazing but was liveable for Guelph. I prefer having a life and not getting paid much vs. getting paid a lot and being married to my job.

ConsJobs come and go with funding, which is mostly out of your hands. The University is currently completing a Program Prioritization Process (PPP). This process looks to cut $32 million dollars from the University budget to make up for the upcoming shortfall. This may impact the availability of employment opportunities.

In order to prevent fraud and other issues of that sort, the University has very specific procedures for procurement of equipment. This process can be slow and painful when trying to acquire even simple pieces of equipment.

You also have to work for three years before you receive dental coverage.

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I worked at University of Guelph part-time

ProsI was doing my PhD, so the TAship was offered in order to assist with financials

ConsWhen combined with a PhD, being a TA cuts down on the time you have to focus on studies

PhD candidate, Biochemistry

PhD Candidate, Biochemistry (Current Employee)
Guelph, ON (Canada)

I have been working at University of Guelph full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSome of the profs are doing leading-edge research and are very passionate about their work which is contagious. The city is awesome to live in. Not a metropolis, but has many parks, recreational activities and very friendly people.

ConsThe labs at Guelph do not have the amount of money to be spent on research as some of the bigger institutions would. It would be more difficult to publish in the higher impact journals.
