Definitely Recommend UH

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Hilo, HI

I worked at University of Hawai'i full-time for more than 3 years

ProsUH is a good work environment with good opportunities and benefits.

ConsYour experience at UH most definitely varies depending on the department that you work in. They're all very different from one another.

All the bureaucracy, none of the pay

Graduate Assistant (Current Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I have been working at University of Hawai'i part-time for more than 3 years

ProsIt's better than paying tuition to go to a sh***y school

ConsUnderpaid, even if we only worked 20 hours, which is what we're salaried for. Sometimes, it's more like 40, but if you complain, you'll probably lose your job.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be a way to purge incompetent office staff, not just shuffle them between departments. Also, there should be a point at which tenured faculty are pushed to be emeritus -- senile old men ho say inappropriate things to students and have no idea what is going on in their labs should no longer be PI's.

Student research assistant to professor in M.E.

Undergraduate Research Assistant (Former Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I worked at University of Hawai'i part-time for more than 3 years

Prosrelaxed, enriching, works around schedule

ConsPay could have been better. But for a student job, it's fine. It would have been nice to be pushed more.

Grateful for the Opportunity

IT Specialist (Current Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I have been working at University of Hawai'i full-time for less than a year

ProsFortunately they hire new grads. I thought it would be a lot harder to find a position right after graduation.

ConsNot a lot of upper campus parking availability. Also, being a student employee doesn't help you at all if you decide to go full-time afterwards. That experience will not count when they determine your salary. (FYI jobseekers)

Advice to Senior ManagementIt would be nice if student work was acknowledged when determining salary. (especially if they were employed in the same place)

Not recommended in general unless all you want is to live in Hawaii for a few years

Postdoctoral Fellow (Current Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I have been working at University of Hawai'i as a contractor for more than 3 years

ProsIt is located on a beautiful island which makes it easier to have a better work-life balance. It is the place with some of the most intelligent people in the state of Hawaii.

ConsThe administration is very ineffective at almost every level. Stipend checks are usually late. Unless you are an employee, there is no job benefit of any sort. Most postdocs are not considered employees and hence, according to the university financial management office, can't travel for business cause. Expect conflicts when you go to a conference or are assigned work trips.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed better consistency at management levels. Need to establish good policies for postdocs and non-tenure researchers if the university wants to become a research university.

Some pockets of innovation among a lot of inertia

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Not a great experience

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at University of Hawai'i

ProsHas some great individual programs. Near beaches and hiking and stuff if you like that.

ConsAdministration is pretty terrible. No campus life to speak of. Honolulu is an incredibly isolated city.

Totally depends on your research group.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Former Employee)
Honolulu, HI

I worked at University of Hawai'i full-time for more than a year

ProsIn the right research groups, you can participate in excellent research and get excellent exposure for future jobs. Pay is fair for the area.

ConsThe University seems to exploit every loophole possible to save money, at the expense of postdocs and students working there. Hiring sometimes appears to be very political in nature rather than motivated by the best candidates.
