I worked at University of Iowa Health Care (Less than a year)

    Pros

Top notch facilities and the people who work there are incredible. If I come back to Iowa I will be working there again.

    Cons

You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't like working at the U. There is a reason they are top ranked every year and it is the culture of being exceptional.

    Advice to Management

Getting paid once a month challenges even the perfect budget. Otherwise my employment experience was exceptional

I have been working at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic place to work. I love my department and my team. I highly recommend UIHC to anyone. Lots of opportunity. Fantastic benefits.

    Cons

There is little outdoor/employee space to enjoy. Most people complain about the commute/parking issue, which is probably the biggest downfall.

    Advice to Management

Be flexible with your employees. Just like you, they have lives that continue outside of work. The best managers are those with understanding of that.

    Pros

Gained good experience in working in an office while in school. I gained background with computers and working with the hospital data bases.

    Cons

The work was very tedious at times. I enjoy working independently at times, but it got boring and the work is just busy work.

    Advice to Management

Overall the supervisors were excellent. They were very easy going and understood if I needed to take time off for school or other situations.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Helping patients and their families; the great caring people who work there.

    Cons

The system is extremely bureaucratic and the HR system is archaic.

    Advice to Management

Improve the merit system so that the best performers get rewarded.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Outstanding benefits, low expectation of productivity, reasonably nice facilities, improving ergonomics and workplace amenities

    Cons

There is a clear division of haves and have-nots as I have never before experienced. Ostensibly good benefits, but the treatment by management almost makes it not worth it. Utterly incompetent middle management.

    Advice to Management

Do what you say you will and mean it. There is a heavy tone of indifference in many (if not all) employee outreach initiatives. Please stop asking for our blood (literally) in addition to our labor.

I worked at University of Iowa Health Care part-time

    Pros

A fair wage of about $8.91/hr is standard for student workers in central Sterilization. The student's direct supervisor is very nice, encouraging, and dutiful. Employee culture is work oriented, but still upbeat and conversational.

    Cons

One con would be that there is obviously tension within the management of this department.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

healthcare benefits are wonderful if you like only being able to go to the university

    Cons

no room for career growth additional training not provided unreasonable expectations supervisors with quick temper supervisors with tenure and early onset dementia salary is not commensurate to level of employment unreasonable educational achievement in comparison to pay for example they only want to pay $40K for a person with a MBA.

    Advice to Management

provide clear reasonable expectations with resources hostile work environments should not be tolerated just because the person has tenure
