Great work place, but it's a shame they merged with CHI

I worked at University of Louisville Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked in the IT department before the merger. The work environment was friendly from my personal experience. Others may not agree but I think it was a collaborative work with a lot of projects and opportunities to excel. Pay was decent in respect to the position. Benefits were very good. Separate accrual rate for sickdays. Unfortunately all of this is different now since 90% of the employees are considered Catholic Health Initiatives or KentuckyOne Health employees.

    Cons

I left due to the merger with fears of losing my position. Talking to friends that still work there, it was a very wise decision. A lot of changes came with the merger and the company seems to be heading off a cliff. I hope that one day they break the merger and find a different way to provide the non-profit healthcare this region needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People will take care of you if you take care of them. The merger was not the answer to the needed expansion. As all mergers the happened in the past, this one will also come to an end, and it will not be easy or cheap this time. Unfortunately by then, other management will pay for their predecessors' mistakes.

I have been working at University of Louisville Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, well-known facility, teaching hospital environment. Working with a variety of medical teams makes for fun and interesting challenges. Trauma season (May-Oct) is insane and busy, but you learn so much!

    Cons

Upper management does not have your back, always working short staffed, no training for things you are expected to do-"baptism by fire" way of thinking. Charting system is very outdated, takes a long time to complete charting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees and they will invest in your business. Burn them, and they won't mind burning you.

    Pros

Orientation was about two weeks, I enjoyed it. Everyone was nice until I got to my unit. One nurse in particular treated me terribly, like I was beneath her. Terrible experience!

    Cons

Rude co-workers, nasty patients, dirty hospital.

    Pros

The people really care and work for the patients. In certain service lines, you have the ability to get as involved as you want.

    Cons

    Leadership is stale and territorial

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think less about yourself and more about the people doing the front line work in the organization. Allow the organization to become more evolved as an organization, instead of a dysfunctional family run business.
