I worked at University of Maine at Machias

    Pros

At the Murdock Fitness Center (gym) you'll find: Friendly people, nice atmosphere, very community oriented, in the beginning stages of focusing on sustainability. Driven student workers are able to focus a decent amount of time on their studies at the front desk position in the gym while accomplishing basic administrative duties. This is the proper definition of a "work study" position. I must say- the same cannot be said regarding other departments throughout the school. This is one reason students get put on waitlists for this specific position. My advice: if you are considering work study, get on the list for a position at the gym ASAP, otherwise if you procrastinate, you'll get stuck at another less desirable position in the school. I was waitlisted for the first two years of my undergraduate career.

    Cons

Student workers are restricted on amount of hours they are able to get because the position is competitive, and depending on their financial aid award amount. Different managers depending on which work study department you work for. Some departments in the school (Admissions, Maintenance, Dormitories, Business Office) use work study students as cheap labor, and make them do all the work the hourly or salary paid people should be doing...meanwhile the work study students never have time to "study" on the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enough cannot be said about the Director of the Murdock Fitness Center (current 2015) whose initials are L.G. She has turned a corrupt operation around with her chipper hands-on attitude and encouraging ways. She has made miracles there, especially considering how much higher-up management restricts growth and ideas. I would advise to the management in other departments throughout the school, especially the admissions department: Allow students who are federal work-study more time to accomplish the "study" part of the agreement instead of using them as cheap labor. And advice for managers throughout the school: You should create more positions for graduating students so that our community (Machias, and the University) can retain vibrant and intelligent young people, instead of them leaving as soon as possible to find viable job opportunities.

I have been working at University of Maine at Machias full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Close to Bar Harbor
-Relatively easy access to New Brunswick and to Nova Scotia
-Individuals generally schedule their own hours

    Cons

-Students are terrible (never prepared, blame adjunct and faculty for all their [student's] problems)
-Pay is severely below average for all positions
    -High cost of living
    -High staff & faculty turnover
    -Uninspiring work environment
-Exceptional and outstanding teaching is not recognized by students or faculty
-Town and surrounding area are lifeless and a total dump

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff and faculty keep leaving because students are so dull and dense. Improve this and more people will stop quitting!
