    Good place for student internships/jobs

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    College Park, MD

ProsThe staff I worked with are very understanding, flexible with student hours, and kind. It's the easiest commute for a student living on campus, and the experience can help you prepare for off-campus opportunities if you're a student.

ConsAs for the cons, you have to deal with the decentralized campus. It can be hard to connect and reach out to other employees when you're trying to get something done. Almost a month into my job, and I've yet to get my own work computer. It's a slow campus when it comes to IT.

Advice to Senior ManagementIT needs to be better. It shouldn't take a month to get a computer, and the university needs better information management.

ProsThe University of Maryland Campus is one of the most diverse campus' in the World. It is a melting pot of cultures and ideas, this is why the University is Ranked as one of the best public institutions in the World.

ConsOnly con would be the DOT, which gives out way too many parking tickets.

Impact of current leadership's decisions remains to be seen...

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    College Park, MD

ProsAs I imagine with all University environments, it's inspiring to work at a research institution whose mission includes the "creation of new knowledge." Impressive students make me feel hopeful for the future. Fantastic benefits and flexibility.

ConsCurrent upper ranks do not always seem to be in agreement/get along and the decision making seems to be much more top down and opportunistic than under the previous administration. Fairly typical leadership transition stuff -- whether the large sweeping decisions current management is making will be good for Maryland in the long run remains to be seen.

Advice to Senior ManagementHone and stick to your vision - and work harder at communicating/getting buy in from the bottom up. Make decisions that are student-centric.

    Not bad, not great

    Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    College Park, MD

ProsGreat benefits, a ton of PTO, good work life balance, job security.

ConsVast majority of the administrative support staff paid well below market rates, there's no upward mobility, a lot of red tape to be expected, not challenging work (except learning to cut through the bureaucratic bs), boring place to work in terms of day to day operations but if you like consistency then you'd love it, overall most people there a very nice and friendly to work with.

Great student part time job at UMD

Field Support- Division of IT (IDS) (Former Employee)
    College Park, MD

ProsGreat people, staff, and fun to be around with. Should be quick to learn and it is a fairly easy job once you get the hang of it. If you have a Test/paper, boss is really understanding and can let you take off because he knows you are a student first. Can lead to full time position if you have an IT background.

ConsStarted with low pay, typically have to start as an underclassman for them to consider you because they want you to be there until you graduate.

    Advice to Senior ManagementN/A.
