I worked at University of Maryland as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is on the higher end of adjunct rates and most of the students care about doing well and put in reasonable effort. In my department (within BSOS) I had a lot of flexibility in designing my course and my department worked with me to have my course designated as fulfilling certain university requirements, which helped ensure adequate enrollment.

    Cons

As with most adjunct teaching, there is no security, although I was still able to teach an under-enrolled online course at prorated pay. The level of support that you receive depends heavily on your department and adjuncts are largely treated as a non-entity at the university level. It definitely helps to have an existing relationship with a department.
