I worked at University of Maryland as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The pay is great for the time commitment. As a research institution, it is a great opportunity to collaborate on academic research that could become published. Office hours prove to be a great time to practice your leadership and teaching skills.

    Cons

It is a one-time stipend pay so if looking for a weekly check, this should be negotiated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of my best experiences was teaching the class for a week while the professor was out on business. Strongly encourage teachers to provide this opportunity to all student teaching assistants,=.

    Pros

Supervisors are very helpful and hours are very flexible. You can have a balance of work and school life.

    Cons

You do not gain much skills or grow as a data entry specialist. The only experience you gain is Microsoft excel.

    Pros

    Tuition Paid for
    Livable Stipend
    Set my own hours
    Good education
    Professors available to help often
    Shuttle bus system
Great benefits for a grad student (medical and dental) if needed

    Cons

I do wish I got paid more...
    No chance for bonuses, really
Parking sucks on campus (small spots, over-crowded lots)
Adviser may be absent often or down your throat depending on who it is, all depends on who you get

I have been working at University of Maryland part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Very flexible hours. Cater to your student needs as well as your schedule. Time off is very easy and you can also do work in the office.

    Cons

Pay grade may start low depending where you work. Minimum wage increase is not applied to all jobs on campus. On of my jobs had it, the other did not.

I have been working at University of Maryland full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I am on staff in one of the colleges and have loved it because of the people I work with and the environment. Benefits are really great.

    Cons

Little to no chance for advancement for staff. An entrenched "rankism" exists -- the belief that only a PhD can do the job. Management lacks ideas and eschews risk-taking or innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much micro-managing and not enough leadership. Although faculty are allowed to work from home, staff is discouraged from doing so. Men are paid higher salaries for same work as women.

I worked at University of Maryland as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Interesting work, fun working with students, nice to work in a lab

    Cons

Pay was not great, the higher staff was constantly changing the curriculum at the last minute, causing the TAs to feel unprepared.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work out the kinks of the curriculum before the semester begins!

I have been working at University of Maryland full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The hours are flexible as long as you get your work done. Most PIs are understanding about family matters. More holidays then just the federal ones - nice break @ Christmas and Spring break.

    Cons

No real childcare available on campus. Have to pay for parking. Work-life balance is difficult because research funding in always sparse and so you feel pressure to do more every week. Each PI is very different in how they train and interact with the people in the labs.
