I worked at University of Maryland as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of freedom in terms of work hours.
Actual intern pay albeit a little above minimum wage
Great experience for those with little on their resume

No mentors, you have to pick everything up yourself by asking for help or doing research yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None, it's on the intern to make do with what they got.

I have been working at University of Maryland full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Highly gifted faculty and students, always a pleasure to work with them. A fabulous place for work-life balance, and the opportunity to learn a lot along the way. I have been blessed with the opportunity to develop my talents and explore new things.

    Cons

Dean's suite does not communicate often enough at the staff level. Some senior managers are completely behind the times and lack the international orientation that would really propel the Smith School to the international calibre that it is capable of. Despite this, the faculty carries the day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more of a presence in the departments and directly with the students. The Dean's office has become too remote. Now that the hiring freeze and budget cuts have been announced, it will be even more important to be present to staff who might be feeling the pain.
