Nice Place to work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at University of Massachusetts full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat environment to work. You will get a chance to earn a or additional degrees if you want. The faculty and administration can be helpful.

ConsNo room for promotion at all. In fact if you start as a receptionist, you retire as a receptionist. Absolutely no promotion unless you move to another department. The other thing you will have to work at least up ten years to earn a decent salary and even by then cost of living is so expensive - then its not a decent salary anymore. Top down communication sucks.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote from within and stop practicing nepotism. Maybe staff will be more encourage to do work. Plus communicate more with members who have to talk to both students and the general public.

Great Deal for Grad School

Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Amherst, MA

I worked at University of Massachusetts as a contractor for more than a year

ProsTeaching and research assistantships provided free tuition and fees while I completed my graduate degree. The work environments were challenging, and I enjoyed them.

ConsIt's a big university, so things can be slow-moving. If you are trying to do something new, it can be tough to get the approvals and get it done in a timely fashion.

Typical New England atmosphere may require extra effort to find your niche.

Graduate Teaching Assistant (Current Employee)
Amherst, MA

I have been working at University of Massachusetts part-time for less than a year

ProsReasonable job duties for grad students, health and dental insurance for single persons and/or families, great Union benefits and advocacy

ConsWages may seem a bit low for work, public institution, preferential treatment within the university for "hard" science disciplines, the weather

Advice to Senior ManagementReconsider wages for grad students

GTA

Graduate Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
Amherst, MA

I worked at University of Massachusetts part-time for more than a year

ProsTuition Reimbursement
Health & Wellness Reimbursements
Excellent Dental and Vision plan
Gained experience teaching in an university setting
access to five colleges

ConsUnderpaid compared to other institutions
always directly affected by state budget cuts
somewhat crappy medical insurance
middle of nowhere town

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your GTA's better and increase the pay so we don't qualify for welfare wages.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at University of Massachusetts full-time for more than a year

ProsState benefits, low pressure, some stability

ConsNo innovation, not eager to think out of the box, not a ton of room for growth

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees and try to understand the big picture. Do not assume because things have run a certain way that it is the right way.

Prosthe students are great--diverse and non-traditional

Great place to work!

Faculty (Current Employee)
Amherst Center, MA

I have been working at University of Massachusetts full-time for more than 5 years

ProsProgressive management, diversity, unionized employees make for a worker-friendly environment. The surroundings are clean, safe, and urbane; nice place to raise a family.

ConsUnderfunded and undervalued by state; there seems to be money for new buildings but not for resources to support employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork more closely with the legislature to get necessary support, and honor faculty governance. Take more responsibility to raise funds; faculty and staff have enough on their plates already.

high energy, high expectation, team-oriented research based problem solving

Research Technician (Former Employee)
Worcester, MA

I worked at University of Massachusetts as an intern for more than 3 years

ProsFellow employees have all "been there before" and are more than willing to help troubleshoot research problems with you.

ConsAs with any biological-research driven based company, hourly schedules often fluctuate with conducted experiments, sometimes requiring later work days or earlier starts. 99% of the time these problems are mitigable with some planning ahead.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt was a pleasure and an invaluable opportunity to work with such highly motivated professionals as an undergraduate intern.
