    Great work opportunity

    Instructor (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsGreat benefits and there's a reason why no one leaves; guaranteed raises and cost of living increases.

ConsThe school is hard to get into because so much movement for higher paying positions is internal. The school tends to move slowly with changes so it can be a bit bureaucratic.

Great university, loved being a student here

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery experienced professors on various disciplines, very good course curriculum, good lab facilities, opportunities to do inter-disciplinary work, great campus, beautiful college town.

ConsCampus is too far from semiconductor companies, hence not many tech come here for career fairs to hire engineers.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo many lights and the air conditioning are left on in many floors of the main library even after hours, especially during summer vacation. It could save a lot of energy if better managed.

    Working in nano technology department.

    Undergraduate Nano Researcher (Former Employee)
    Lowell, MA

ProsFlexible work schedule. Nice apartments provided, furnished, with housekeeping. Nice faculty, good work experience. Gym available for interns. Lots of free time during the week and weekends.

ConsContract amount was not fulfilled. Apartments 10 minutes away from campus, have a car or bike, unless you want to take a taxi daily. Some work on the side of your project is required and seems tedious and unnecessary.

Advice to Senior ManagementFulfill your contracts, don't allude to paying for travel, put travel amount in contract and not pay it.

    Pleasant, supportive team and culture

ESL Tutor and TA (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsGreat environment and culture, fabulous and thoughtful people, lots of opportunities for growth and self development.

ConsThe tutoring hours aren't consistent, but that is the nature of the job. Depending on which ESL instructor you get paired up with, if you're unlucky, the instructor may not know how best to work with the tutor.

A good work-study job to have

    Staffroom Consultant (Former Employee)
    Amherst, MA

Prosflexible work hours, non-stressful work environment, get to be on a computer for most shifts, time to do homework during downtime

Consnot much opportunity for advancement (it's a work-study job), favoritism when it comes to promoting managers, very low pay

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to avoid favoritism when promoting people, consider shorter overlaps for certain shifts, get lighter vacuums

    Satisfied

    Graduate Assistant (Current Employee)

ProsUniversity of Massachusetts Amherst is located in a beautiful, safe town in Western Mass and affiliated with other four colleges in the area including Amherst and Smith college.

ConsI had a great time there as a graduate student so no complaints

    Great place for research

    Graduate Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Amherst, MA

ProsGreat research facility, many oportunities for collaborations, nice and quite place for graduate students. Several strong graduate programs including Food Science, Engineering and Polymer science.

ConsMay not be suitable for a city person since not a lot of city-like activity avaliable. There are few good restaurants but still lacking due to the size of the town. Living cost is relatively high considering a setting of a small town.

As TA for your grad department, you gain insights and connections

    Graduate Teaching Assistant (Former Employee)
    Amherst, MA

ProsGrad school assistant-ships are great if you like to teach and are comfortable with content. Wonderful for your resume if you are looking to teach at university level. As it is a union job, you have grate hourly salary, stability and protection from potentially abusive faculty

ConsBe sure that you have the time and are willing to be invested in your students.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior TAs are really important to a smooth running semester!
