Good experience, not a long term option.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFlexible work life balance, laid back environment. Great people to work with, nice to work somewhere that does make a positive contribution to the community through its research. Decent benefits.

ConsToo much University bureaucracy, too many employees who aren't competitive but simply stick around for the staff benefits. There aren't enough career progression opportunities as there are in the private sector.

Advice to Senior ManagementShould be greater focus on innovation and performance management of employees. Those who under perform should be pushed out.

Some great people, some not so great

    Tutor (Current Employee)
    Melbourne (Australia)

ProsGood pay and clear expectations. Most people are lovely and helpful, although some are not so helpful and a little odd.

ConsOn several occasions it took me months to get paid. This is reasonably common because the system is quite complex, and there can be several people required to approve pay.

Great pay, great location; lack of early preparation/organisation with tutorial content at times.

    Faculty Tutor (Former Employee)
    Melbourne (Australia)

ProsGreat location and pay was good, Flexibility with time tabling and schedule was appreciated. Senior staff and lecturers were very approachable and open to feedback; environment was highly collaborative.

ConsProblems with errors in tutorial solution sets and assignment model answers caused problems/delays with marking. Often received tutorial guides extremely late, leading to totes being run/developed "on the fly".
Extremely short handed tutorial staff on some units led to some extremely hectic weeks if one tutor was unavailable/away, particularly during assessments/marking. Students had a lot or problems with some subjects, where tutorial content/curriculum seemed unstructured and/or not directly related to lecture content.

ProsPay is good for a university.

ConsUnimelb is all about brand image, it is not backed up at the level of the department.

A greedy bureaucracy, obsessed with appearance at the expense of substance

    Research Fellow (Current Employee)

    ProsGood academics occasionally visit
    Good location close to CBD
Slightly less bureaucratic than state government

ConsSteadily increasing bureaucracy at the expense of productivity.
Full of lazy and uninspiring academics with low ambition
Not a good place for ambitions people
Excessive focus on advertising and manufacturing 'excellence' to attract foreign students
Decades behind the cutting edge in research

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can't run a University like McDonald's. Re-orient the focus on substance rather than profit. The performance management culture and glossy brochures scare away good academics.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
