Pros – Serves as a unique educational experience. You are presented with some very unique and interesting work opportunities
Cons – I constantly felt uncomfortable working in the complementary medicine department. The Deans in charge do a poor job of communicating with employees.
Advice to Senior Management – The entire department works extremely hard, but are not skilled in effectively communicating with upper management (the Chairs in the Med School). Nor are they skilled in effectively communicating with staff members.

Pros – Excellent workplace, plenty of support for advancement, beautiful campus. The salary is competitive and benefits are good as well. Also Miami is a great city to live.
Cons – City is a bit expensive, opportunities to collaborate are limited. Graduate student level needs to be elevated, a task which is very difficult. It is hard to find help for high level research.
Advice to Senior Management – The management is doing a good job, which shows in the results achieved in the last few years. Incentives for new active junior and senior hires should be generated, once the economy picks up.

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – The students are highly qualified and eager to learn. The work environment is very relaxed.
Cons – There is very little room for advancement.
Advice to Senior Management – When faculty members are evaluated by students and receive excellent feedback, consider them for a job with more responsibilities. Challenge them to do more! It is discouraging to have no place to move up.

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – The location and the University's developing reputation are good reasons to work here. The atmosphere is generally collegial. The salary and benefits structure are fair, although generally not comparable to the private sector unless one works in the medical division.
Cons – Overall, the University lacks a management development program. As a result, they regularly go outside the University to hire business/management talent rather than developing within.
Advice to Senior Management – University could do a better job with developing management.

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – Great location in a top-50 university. Very competent people work here, and weather is very good (except for the occasional hurricane). Health benefits help a lot.
Cons – In the Department of Mathematics, 9 out of 17 lecturers are Hispanic; however, none of the 35 professor is, and there never has been one. This is a red flag because of the location: 70% of the population in South Florida is Hispanic and common sense (and anecdotal evidence) suggests that many Hispanic candidates would apply. There seems to be a bias in hiring.
Advice to Senior Management – Look into hiring bias.

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – Community
people you work with
location
great pride in the U
benefits are awesome
History and respect that UM generates from other businesses
Cons – The pay i must admit is very low compared to other places with similar job titles but the benefits I guess make up for that
Opportunity is limited
Advice to Senior Management – Offering your employees better pay. Also sometimes you dont get to meet people in other departments because everything is run seperately

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – Fair, high expectations of employees, must get a lot done in a small amount of time and limited resources
Cons – the pay is below what is required of the employees, lots of red tape, operates like the government and can be very fruturating at times
Advice to Senior Management – need a better understanding of employees, sometimes there is too great a distance from the uppermanagement to the people on the lower levels

Current Employee – been working at University of Miami
Pros – The place has it's deficiencies but so does every other place in the city of MIami. Overall working at the School of Medicine is a pleasure.
Cons – There are alot of rude people, which gets to be a bother becuase there is a need for communication between departments.
This could be more of a reflection on the city though.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep on listening to the employees need and make sure that all promises are kept and full followed through with.

Former Employee – worked at University of Miami
Pros – This is possibly the easiest job ever. It takes no skills to perform and the hours are flexible. The senior staff is nice although they hold unnecessary meetings every week. If you go to UM, be a UA for a semester then get promoted to supervisor its the greatest job ever.
Cons – The meetings suck and they just go over the same thing ever week. Morning shifts and night shifts aren't that bad and you can usually get out of it because there's always one employee who want them.
Advice to Senior Management – Its pretty clear that everyone knows exactly how much work is being done but the management still needs to hold meetings every Friday to pretend its a super professional place. Cut the meetings.

Former Employee – worked at University of Miami
Pros – Donna Shalala is turning this place into a world class leader, we've risen into the top 50 list of colleges in her term here, and its a great to see this recognition. There are people here who think very progressively and others who do not wish to cooperate with other departments. The campus is honestly a resort with palm trees and greenery everywhere. With it being a campus there is vibrancy and youth everywhere so its always high energy. There is always a place to go eat, always a place to stop and relax. So that is certainly a great thing.
Cons – Some managers and deans do not cooperate with other managers and deans in the university. politics still hinders some progress in terms of technology. we have 3 separate groups handling IT not just 1. Sometimes purchasing can be a really tough issue to tackle as most of us are required to purchase from the technology product center, which has a limited group of purchasing sources. Sometimes knowing we can get it elsewhere its difficult to pass through as a direct purchase. However these are issues that could be solved with an expansion of purchasing policies for the university for IT.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep your ears open and stave off any politics
