Graduate students have no rights as employees but provide a lot to the university

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI receive a free education as a graduate student and it's very prestigious with an amazing alumni network. You have access to top quality resources.

ConsI feel disrespected by everyone, professors and staff included, but especially by the administration. As a graduate student, I am a teacher, a researcher. I have a master's degree and tons of experience, but in am treated as if I have no rights to anything. I am a student without the benefits of being a student and a employee without the benefits of being an employee. When I graduate, they had better put me on no call list for donations.

    Good academic environment

Graduate Student Research Assistant (Current Employee)
    Ann Arbor, MI

ProsA very large university with a good number of interdisciplinary research going on between students in different departments

ConsIf not well prepared for the graduate program, one can feel neglected at the start of the graduate program

ProsThis is a wonderful school. You'll meet plenty of people, and be challenged to your maximum. Definitely worth at least visiting.

ConsIf you can't take the cold, you will hate it here. It's also fairly expensive, especially out of state. The classes can be pretty impersonal too

Advice to Senior ManagementThe housing division and rec sports division are very corrupt and are stealing money from the students basically.

    Great working environment.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Ann Arbor, MI

ProsGreat benefits, especially vacation and the retirement match. Easy access to some world-class academic facilities and hospital resources. Ann Arbor is a great town, and a very nice place to live.

ConsSlow advancement (low turnover). Low salaries for junior staff. Ann Arbor is very cosmopolitan for its size, but if you want the big city, it's not here.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep making training opportunities available--the more, the better. Be more flexible about which classes count for tuition support. Admin/staff ratio also seems out of balance.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

For students looking for a part time job, look here (in any of the many departments)

    Intramural Referee (Former Employee)
    Ann Arbor, MI

ProsThere's plenty to do part-time as a student (which is my perspective). The hours are flexible so you can work as much or as little as you need/can. You can make plenty of connections either with professors when doing research or learning valuable skills such as teamwork and conflict resolution by working with the IM Sports department. Numerous opportunities to enhance college experience.

ConsThe job I held was minimum wage to start so don't expect a lot in payment. Still, you could do much worse.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider many of the recommendations of your employees in the field, especially if they are students. We do have some good ideas on improving things
