Pros
U of M gets the sickest of the sick patients, and they provide top notch care. They employ some of the most talented doctors and nurses around.
The unit is very beneficial for the RNs.
Cons
Employee recognition is not the best. The university is really trying to take a lot from the nurses with the most recent contract negotiation.
Advice to Senior Management
You have some of the most talented nurses around that have incredible skill. You should really treat them right with this contract, and retain the good nurses before they all leave.
Pros
* Excellent vacation and the best retirement package around;
* Limited (if any) travel requirements;
* Location, location, location;
* Job Security -- very very low turnover;
Cons
* Silo-like organization chart.
* Apathy within the MCIT department;
* Politically motivated; personal agendas seem to be the top priority;
* Not a very cooperative environment; there is a LOT of bullying that goes on. It's widely recognized and accepted.
* Absolutely no career management practices in place across the organization -- It'e nearly impossible to move around let alone move up in this organization;
* It's an academic environment with a lot of big egos constantly trying to "correct" you on everything from how to do your job and whether you should be drinking bottled water or not; Honestly, these people have a very difficult time communicating without lecturing;
* Not a very friendly environment if you don't subscribe to the liberal ideology. I wouldn't say it's hostile because it's not at all. But, don't expect to make too many friends if you're not comfortable with liberal ideology.
Advice to Senior Management
Having worked for both private and public sector employers with good management teams, there are a few opportunities to improve morale.
* Stop playing the "avoidance game" and deal with the issues. Start holding people accountable for their actions.
* Shake up the culture a little via changing management. The place has gone stale with the same managers/directors/executives in place for multiple decades now.
* Break down the silos, consolidate/streamline services, and try to get MCIT to focus on business/clinical acumen instead of just technology.
Pros
The benefits package. Especially the retirement package, because there isn't many businesses that are contributing 10% for every 5% an employee puts into a retirement account.
Cons
Ever since they have upgraded the job application system online, it is very hard to see if a person is getting a fair shake when applying. Also, depending on where you work, the parking situation can sometimes be a tough pill to swallow.
Pros
Flexible work-life balance; Friendly people; Great benefit packages;
Cons
Salaries are on the low end;
Pros
UMHS is a strong health system doing a lot of things right.
Cons
In my department, work distribution is poor and leadership is even poorer. There are people who don't deserve their jobs.
Pros
The 2 for 1 403(b) (non-profit version of a 401(k)) is really hard to beat. The health insurance costs are still fairly reasonable, when compared with other company's costs. If you find an area you like and they like you, you're in good shape. Well-known institution with high level of patient care.
Cons
Little value placed on employee competence, efficiency, education, knowledge, or skills. Most departments would rather look outside of the University to fill new positions than look at their own staff for consideration for promotion. I've received the highest ratings for my performance evaluations for the past 8 years. While I have received a raise, it wouldn't have been any different than had I not gone back to school to get a Master's degree and had just stayed in the job I started back in 1998 (if I had stayed there and gathered typical increase (2-3%), I'd be making the exact same salary - instead, I was told that getting a Masters degree would help me move up and I haven't begun to make more, and actually lose money every year). Parking - you'll hear it from everyone. If you want to pay big bucks (over $600 a year), you can park nearby - if you can find a spot. I pay the cheapest version - $74 a year - to park about 3 miles away and get to hope the bus stops when I leave work (it's often so full of students they just drive past).
Advice to Senior Management
Promote more from within. There are a lot of great employees who would love to move up within the institution. Allow more flexibility for professional development.
Pros
the beneifits are great, in some departments you have flexibility , I work with awsome co-workers, We get paid vacation and sick time , it's in Ann Arbor
Cons
The parking is horrible- you have to pay a lot of money or park way out and walk or bus in.
The pay is not great
Advice to Senior Management
Pay more money, offer longivity bonuses in every department
Pros
good benefits. large diverse institution
Cons
There isn't much opportunity for advancement in the lab where I work.
Advice to Senior Management
They should be more fair in who they give raises to.

Cons

The pay is not great for medical assistants..
Advice to Senior Management
Pay MA's more money, offer longivity bonuses in every department.
Pros
1. Lots of smart people, with incredible projects. If you are motivated, you can learn about all sorts of interesting things
2. It's stable
3. Benefits are some of the best in the area
Cons
1. Work environment is not the best. Lots of smart people can often mean lots of egos.
2. Low turnover is great on one hand, but it also means the barriers are down for better or worse. Some people have been working together so long that they have completely lost track of professionalism
Advice to Senior Management
There needs to be a more specific strategic vision within each department. New initiatives should be evaluated against the vision, and staffing should be appropriate to the complexity of the project.
