I have been working at University of Michigan full-time

    Pros

    - It will look good on your CV/resume
    - Benefits are decent, but you better use them or lose them!
    - Great medical/scientific resources available FREE, including UM libraries & staff support.
    - Clinical supervisors & the patients we care for are top notch.

    Cons

Pay below private sector, but I knew that when I accepted this position. Even worse, in our small area, is the blatant nepotism, bullying & legally questionable employment practices going on. Every dept is different - I'm speaking for a select area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read your policies & then enforce them. Please revisit the one about about 'no backlash for reporting concerns....'

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Flexibility
    Benefits
    Retirement match
Able to use annual leave without many questions from upper management (although campus should get on page with the health system and switch to a PTO format)

    Cons

Micromanagement approach from overseeing units (I.e. Office of Research, or UMOR)
Opportunities are limited for administrative staff
    Low compensation compared to corporate
As mentioned above, a switch to the PTO system versus vacation/sick would allow more flexibility on how time off is used.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Research units should be able to have more autonomy and not have to conform to additional policies set by the Office of Research that are not actually in practice at any other unit. That office could definitely benefit from a clean sweep of the incompetent directors who are granted too much powers yet aren't actually completing any real work.

I have been working at University of Michigan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great places to work
    Benefits are second to none.
    Won't ever be shut down
    Stable Employer
    Great work/life balance
Dependent on job but many opportunities to move else where

    Cons

    Stuck up doctors/nurses
Pay is lower than private industry
    Change is very slow
Raises are usually standard 2% (even if better merit than others)
    Management vary in quality
Some employees have made entry level or mid management their life time positions, therefore you get stuck working with them on occassion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to listen to whom directly your actions and decisions are affecting, because if you don't we shall rise and overcome. Jk, but in all honestly just listen to those who are direct care employees about the wants and needs they'd like to see changed and not "what the hospital wants"

I worked at University of Michigan part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are incredible opportunities for research at UofM, and potentially a chance to truly distinguish yourself at a globally well-reputed institution.

    Cons

As in all academia, pay is low and continued employment mostly uncertain (before tenure). Opportunities at UofM depend very heavily upon the leadership of the research-group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure teaching/research balance without altering courses by permitting single-submission of group-work.
Have graduate researchers track specific events in the course (with records held by faculty) of their programs so that professors may be held accountable for needless disruptive alterations to projects or other workplace problems. Even if the matter rarely comes up directly, the extra security could go a long way towards improving productivity.

    Pros

They pay you to do stuff that you'd totally do for free (if you're like me and do science anyway purple monkey dishwasher minimum word limits).

    Cons

Eh, maybe you will be pressured to give talks and go to conferences. It, of course, completely depends on who your advisor is.

    Pros

Good pay. Great benefits. It is a huge organization so there is plenty of room to move around and a lot of opportunities.

    Cons

In my department, the management was very scattered. There were times I did not even know who my supervisor was. There needs to be more of a sense of teamwork.
