I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    good salary, good work environment.

    Cons

nothing much to do in city.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not keep on firing people! Have focus on system correction, firing someone does not fix the problem.

I worked at University of Mississippi Medical Center

    Pros

The lab was a decent place to work in. The people were generally nice, and it is a good place for students to learn.

    Cons

Pay is too low for the degree, lots of complaining from staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would say to the management to be more considerate of people in the laboratory. They deserve raises too just like other positions. The workload doesn't reflect the compensation.

Great place to work considering it is a governmental organization.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

UMMC is an organization that is truly striving to change the health of the state of Mississippi. There are some incredible people who work here and are sincerely committed to getting people back on their feet. You will not find better technical healthcare in the state.

    Cons

Very much a state organization. While people are driven to take care of people, it is quickly diluted in the vast amount of bureaucracy. If you are on a progressive team with strong leadership, you can have a great experience. However, be wary of the "typical lifer governmental employee...

If you are looking for a positive bedside manner, you will likely want to look elsewhere. If you are looking for a good wellness program, you will likely want to look elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek stability. There is so much turnover at the upper ranks, the middle management ignores upper leadership.
Empower management. Provide them training and encouragement. Talk to them and meet with them.
Change the culture of the Human Resources Department. The HR department is more concerned about political correctness and risk management that managers cannot manage. Get an HR department that supports the organization, not the bureaucracy.

    Pros

University pays more than most other state agencies and is located in central Mississippi. there is a work environment that allows for individuals to feel like they are always part of the team.

    Cons

working at any hospital has it challenged and university is no different. there is limited ability to move up the corporate ladder leaving employees feel as if they have no options.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Depending on the lab you're working in, there's always something to do
    Nice people
    Decent atmosphere
Loose protocol for clocking in and out

    Cons

Co-workers constantly trying to get over on other co-workers
Bad management over the lab techs
    Bad attitude of the post-docs
    PAY
They love for you to work overtime, even though you're paid a salary
They take about 15% of your check for retirement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please raise the salary for your tech positions. It requires plenty of overtime with no compensation. The salary is barely enough to survive off.

I have been working at University of Mississippi Medical Center full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Insurance is awesome. For those who say it isn't, you don't know how to use it well. Flexibility after probationary period is nice. Holidays off are great.

    Cons

Make sure you know who's butt to kiss in certain departments or you will never advance or get a raise. Salary has not advanced for cost of living in the past 4 years. And trust me cost of living has increased greatly (just ask my gas tank, my electric bill, my water bill, etc). Parking is the worst thing ever.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not only give your buddies raises time and time again. They don't work hard enough to deserve them. Monitor office superiors and maintain a record of incidences so when enough occur they should be fired.
