I worked at University of Missouri

    Pros

Department is fairly hands-off. As long as you get research done, you are fine. No one cares that much about teaching, unless if it generates the department money.

    Cons

Department does not seem that interested in improving its rankings or reputation. Faculty are not that around much, but not that helpful when they are around.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Research institution
    Diversity
    location
Ability to move upward in positions

    Cons

    Large classes
College of Liberal Arts Career center is understaffed and mostly offers peer assistance to students (undergraduates who are not professionals).
Lack of quality instruction and guidance in writing
Lack of quality instruction and guidance in critical thinking

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Incorporate writing and critical thinking into more classe materials.

Look at getting the career center more in align with other colleges and universities who do not rely so much on peer professionals and are managed by individuals with a career-counseling backgrounds.

I worked at University of Missouri full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The hours are good, the pay is decent, the benefits are okay, you get a holiday or two, a sick day and a vacation day a month, plus personal days.

    Cons

You put up with a lot, unless you are management you will never be able to get ahead here - it is what it is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

All talk and that's about it. No one cares about staff in the least.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits. Hard to get fired.

    Cons

Very siloed. No communication. No collaboration. The attitude is, "This is the way we've always done things, so this is the way it's done." If you haven't worked here for at least 10-20 years, you don't have the back-story, the history, the advantage. That is a real disadvantage. The pay is half what you should get in the real world (Academia not being the real world).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle Management is a roadblock to improvement (CYA). Bring in some new blood there. Look carefully at long-time employees and how they are stifling innovation. There is hope with Senior Management.
