I have been working at University of Missouri full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits. Hard to get fired.

    Cons

Very siloed. No communication. No collaboration. The attitude is, "This is the way we've always done things, so this is the way it's done." If you haven't worked here for at least 10-20 years, you don't have the back-story, the history, the advantage. That is a real disadvantage. The pay is half what you should get in the real world (Academia not being the real world).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle Management is a roadblock to improvement (CYA). Bring in some new blood there. Look carefully at long-time employees and how they are stifling innovation. There is hope with Senior Management.

I worked at University of Missouri

    Pros

Interesting and varied duties. Opportunity to learn new computer skills for free. Lovely campus. Located in the center of the city so easy to run errands at lunch time or after work.

    Cons

No mentoring. Don't take a staff job if it is the highest title in a department - you can't get promoted. Over time the staff workload has increased dramatically due to high enrollments, but salaries have stagnated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Institute a standardized business policy and implement a mentoring problem. Staff often feel isolated and under valued.

    It was great experience

Former Intern - Marketing Coordinator in Columbia, MO

I worked at University of Missouri as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I did an internship for the Women's Volleyball team. It was good marketing experience, learning to build plans scratch and working with a diverse team. My boss was great.

    Cons

It was unpaid. I was forced to work with a person who actively worked against me at every turn. It was a lesson on how to work with people I guess

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider some base compensation. I had to get a second job to make some money that summer because the internship was unpaid.

I have been working at University of Missouri

    Pros

Good pay for first job, really laid back environment, cool bosses, flexible schedule, tutoring is really fun and awesome

    Cons

Not enough hours, students cancel very often so don't make as much money as you are scheduled to, tutoring can be kind of a pain in the butt some days

    Pros

Collegial, collaborative, friendly, flexible, Columbia is a vibrant and diverse city in an otherwise conservative landscape
