I worked at University of Missouri part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I had a great experience learning and working with the managers at Mark Twain Market. The schedule was flexible and they let me bring in my own ideas and creativity to improve the workplace for employees and customers.

    Cons

As a student it may be difficult to be promoted for the small amount of student management positions available. Sometimes the shifts you would want to work would get filled up too quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep working to grow and teach the students good work ethic and how to be a talented manager.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The idea to provide meaningful programs is there, the follow through is sometimes flat. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Pay is lower than median. Much lower.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in people, reduce spending on useless software and online education initiatives

I have been working at University of Missouri part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The resources and infrastructure here are amazing. The University does a good job of supporting research and professional advancement of graduate students.

    Cons

Long hours, short pay, underappreciation by professors, and lots of verbal abuse unless you pick the right advisor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider student health more than incoming funding as a rubric for advisor success. Too often, students get thrown under the bus because a professor brings in big cash. I understand you need cash, but good funding is not the only evidence of good science or good scientists.

I have been working at University of Missouri full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The campus is absolutely beautiful and the town of Columbia is a great place to live. There are chances to move up within the University if you are in the top of your field, or connected/related to top administration.

    Cons

Nepotism is rampant as is the good ole boy mentality. Most promotions and openings are filled by relatives of employees and their friends. The University structure is very fractured and there is little oversight or governance from the top administrators. Staff is generally not highly valued by the top administrators and especially not by the faculty. There is a large baby boomer problem. University funds are tied up by salaries and benefits of the older and overpaid generation who produce very little. This strongly discourages young capable staff members to stay as their chances of moving up are typically blocked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house. No one is entitled to a job just because they have been here for years or because their family has always worked here. reward those who produce and continue to invest in themselves in regards to professional development.

I have been working at University of Missouri part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people, good benefits for a part-time job (like health insurance), Columbia is also a nice town to live in.

    Cons

Not many that I can think of. For out-of-state students, it's a great deal as the entire portion of the out-of-state tuition is waived with an assistantship, not the case in Kansas and Iowa.

I have been working at University of Missouri part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Easy
    Interactive
    Social
    Good pay and hours
The job is usually really simple, just help customers find the electronics and computers they want.
The management isn't bad, they're usually really helpful
The best part is, in my opinion, that you're not encouraged to sell the customer products they don't need

    Cons

Management sometimes doesn't know what's going on
The work can sometimes get boring but most of your coworkers are interesting enough to keep you from getting bored

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
