I have been working at University of Montana full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits which you'll receive even while only employed at 50% time. Tuition waiver for staff/faculty. Flexible hours are often available depending on your position. Missoula isn't a large city/town, so commute times are short. If you're not braindead you can work at 15% efficiency and still out-perform most of your coworkers. Most staff positions are unionized so you can't get fired.

    Cons

They tell you there's a career ladder but neglect to tell you there are no rungs on the ladder. Administration tearfully says a horrible economy means no raises for staff or faculty and vacated positions won't be filled, yet somehow keeps hiring new provosts and administrators with fancy titles to help them reach the "lofty" goals of the Strategic Plan. Nevermind the fact that the four year graduation rate is still 40% and certainly won't be helped by having grad students teach classes instead of adjunct and tenured faculty. Wages across the board for staff, adjunct, and tenured faculty are abysmal. Probably not a good sign when a department head has to teach summer school classes to pay their mortgage. If you're not braindead you'll get to pick up the slack in your department while the people who have worked there 20+ years under-perform and get paid twice as much as you do. Most staff positions are unionized so they can't get fired. And the student janitors will steal your food from the fridge.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management might want to consider actually focusing on how best to educate the students instead of crafting new logos or offering discounts to the football game.

Former Employee - Student Custodian in Missoula, MT

I worked at University of Montana part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

For my student custodial job, my supervisor made coming to work enjoyable, there was opportunity to pick up extra hours regularly and my coworkers were great!

    Cons

Not a lot of hours. You are looking at few hours a week though. 3.5 hours a way and 5 days a week is what I worked. Monday- Thursday was 8:00pm to 11:30pm and Friday was 4:30-8pm. This did constrain the classes I could take a little bit, as working a later shift will screw with your sleeping schedule.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An increase in pay for the student workers who live off campus would be beneficial. Missoula is an expensive town and pulling in $400 a month makes getting by really tough. More hours or an increase in pay would be great.

    Pros

Incredible autonomy is given when interacting with and helping the student customers of this business. These interactions are the most rewarding and educational experiences at this business.

    Cons

With autonomy comes responsibility, and oversight is sometimes lacking. Employees are trained in policies related to their work, but they must ensure that they are followed.

    Pros

The open minded and creative nature of the people and department I worked in where great! I miss it since I left, and would love a chance to return.

    Cons

Job stability was always a problem, and changing budgets, and direction seemed to always keep you at the edge of your seat, to see if you would have a job the next semester.
