I have been working at University of Nebraska Medical Center as an intern (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great school that wants everyone to succeed in medicine and research.

    Cons

Some of the professors are really cutthroat, so choose a lab to work in wisely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at University of Nebraska Medical Center full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Everyone is friendly, good perks, something fun always going on (like a 'green' inititives, fittness challenges, events)

    Cons

It's the best medicine-related place to work in the state so it's really competitive, sometimes competition between employees instead of collaboration. Also, I feel that I am underpaid.

I worked at University of Nebraska Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Salaries are pretty standard now (they became more standardized across campus in 2010, although still vary based on department). Student health insurance is decent, with options to also purchase eye and dental at good rates.

    Cons

There are no advocates for regulating work hours; 60 - 80 hr work weeks were normal across the board amongst my peers. The Chancelor devalued graduate students at the school as well. No standardization for employer - employee relations and employee rights were enforced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be advocates for your students and employees.

UNMC is a good school but scientific research is a struggling field.

I have been working at University of Nebraska Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

UNMC has fantastic facilities and talented, smart faculty.

    Cons

The nature of scientific research is that you are expected to put in long hours for little pay. This would not be an issue if there were light at the end of the tunnel, but there are so many science PhDs graduating that jobs are extremely scarce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to make students aware of alternative career paths and encourage them to prepare themselves for those careers during graduate school, even if that interferes slightly with their research.

I worked at University of Nebraska Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits package (including tuition)

    Cons

I suspect its dependent on the department you are employed in. My department was staffed by inept management (poor managerial/operational skills) and frustrated employees which led to much turnover during my 3 year tenure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

REVIEW your managers and ensure that they adhere to standards.
