    Great experience

    Postdoctoral Research Associate (Current Employee)
    Omaha, NE

ProsEveryone is friendly, good perks, something fun always going on (like a 'green' inititives, fittness challenges, events)

ConsIt's the best medicine-related place to work in the state so it's really competitive, sometimes competition between employees instead of collaboration. Also, I feel that I am underpaid.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe better about promoting people

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    On Your Own

    Graduate Research Assistant (Former Employee)
    Omaha, NE

ProsSalaries are pretty standard now (they became more standardized across campus in 2010, although still vary based on department). Student health insurance is decent, with options to also purchase eye and dental at good rates.

ConsThere are no advocates for regulating work hours; 60 - 80 hr work weeks were normal across the board amongst my peers. The Chancelor devalued graduate students at the school as well. No standardization for employer - employee relations and employee rights were enforced.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe advocates for your students and employees.

UNMC is a good school but scientific research is a struggling field.

    Graduate Student (Current Employee)
    Omaha, NE

ProsUNMC has fantastic facilities and talented, smart faculty.

ConsThe nature of scientific research is that you are expected to put in long hours for little pay. This would not be an issue if there were light at the end of the tunnel, but there are so many science PhDs graduating that jobs are extremely scarce.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to make students aware of alternative career paths and encourage them to prepare themselves for those careers during graduate school, even if that interferes slightly with their research.

    A great place to learn

    Graduate Student (Current Employee)
    Omaha, NE

ProsCutting-edge research from basic to translational. Several on-campus collaborations. Access to several core facilities. New research buildings with great labs.

ConsNot aware of a career center/resources. Not enough university housing. Med school/students get pampered while grad students do not often get recognition.

Advice to Senior ManagementCelebrate the graduate students more. We deserve it.

Current knowledge lacking, poor opportunities for advancement, frustrating politics

    Project Director (Former Employee)
    Omaha, NE

    ProsGood benefits package (including tuition)

ConsI suspect its dependent on the department you are employed in. My department was staffed by inept management (poor managerial/operational skills) and frustrated employees which led to much turnover during my 3 year tenure.

Advice to Senior ManagementREVIEW your managers and ensure that they adhere to standards.
