I worked at University of New Haven part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

the graduate assistant program gave me the opportunity to work while earning my masters degree. it was convenient to work on campus and the scholarship relieved a giant financial burden for me. I liked getting to work in a low stress job that was relevant to my degree.

    Cons

getting into the graduate work program is a little vague, you just upload your resume and hope to hear back, while asking around at every single place you possibly can if they have a graduate position open. I was lucky to have a referral to a job, but the position didn't open up until my second trimester. the office where i was placed was fantastic to work in, but there was no room to turn the graduate assistantship into a post grad career.

I have been working at University of New Haven full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The culture here is strong, supporting a really collegial and family-like environment. The benefits are good, particularly with our 403(b) plans. Even through economic struggles, the University has done well financially and supported a minimum cost of living salary increase each year, something my colleagues at other institutions have not had - many have experienced salary and job cuts, which we have not experienced at UNH, to my knowledge.

    Cons

We're very resource light, so everyone wears multiple hats, leading to a fairly stressful work environment with high demands. As other reviewers have noted, upper level administration does not communicate well down the ladder and they show little regard or understanding for the ground-level work that has to be done to support the student community on a daily basis.

I have been working at University of New Haven full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, very good institution with fantastic faculty and students. Dedicated, hardworking staff. Huge growth within the past 20 years. FANTASTIC school. Workplace? Not as much.

    Cons

Bad management all around, and the administration simply does not care. Terrible work/life balance. Constant expectations to check email and voicemail while out of the office, and constant pressure to do so even on vacation (by both supervisors and administration).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your staff as much as you value yourself. Cut employees who are not doing the work (and have been in that position for years). Do an extremely intense audit on departmental management, and understand why there is so much turnover, especially in specific divisions.
