    Pros

It was a relaxed atmosphere - fairly low stress. The work-life balance was excellent. Also, there are excellent benefits, I enjoyed the access to lectures on campus, and enjoyed my fellow colleagues. The department I worked in was fairly collegial with good management.

    Cons

There was little room for advancement. Instead of being promoted up, you basically had to apply for a new job within the University. And of course, paying for parking was terrible. Also, while I was working there, there weren't any COL adjustments, promotions, bonuses because of a state budget shortage.

    Advice to Management

Work harder to find opportunities to help employees advance.

  2. Lots of great people, but a lot of bureaucracy

    Pros

You encounter a lot of really great people working at UNC - smart, dedicated, and driven. There are also a lot of opportunities at such a large and prestigious research institute.

    Cons

Because it's such a big place, there is a lot more competition, and you often feel like a number. There is a lack of one-on-one time in a lot of scenarios. Also, the public nature of the university means that salaries are often lower.

    Advice to Management

There's not much that can be done about the compensation, but I think there should be a greater focus on the success of individuals, rather than doing everything in the name of the institution.

    Pros

A lot of opportunities to move up and around within the organization. Fellow employees are more like family than simply colleagues.

    Cons

I honestly can't think of any.

    Pros

The general academic schedule (busy Aug-May, but nice holiday breaks, slower in summer) and culture; ample opportunities for personal growth (trainings, workshops, common interest groups); good enterprise communications via email ListServs

    Cons

Lack of interdepartmental professional collaboration (Ivory Towers rise high with lots of space in between); The people tend to worry only about themselves, their own work, and how you can contribute to their worth rather than the organization; Steering committees are not quality assurance mechanisms, but are the means by which personal agenda are advanced

    Advice to Management

This is a PUBLIC higher education institution, not a PRIVATE corporation. Different foundations, philosophies, and core management principles should be applied. The bottom line should never be about profit margins, but about serving the community.....with integrity.

  9. Enjoy the work atmosphere in general. Continually developing integrated business model within the spirit of innovation.
