I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

UNC Chapel Hill is the strongest state employer in terms of salary, career advancement, and job growth.

    Cons

Work in certain locations can be very stressful and personally demanding.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It should be possible to take vacation time without having to spend a month catching back up or responding to past e-mails.

I worked at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nice campus. If you seek a very layback working environment or you just need to gain couple years experience and leave for good, it is a good place to work.

    Cons

Terrible HR, poor pay for mid-senior level research personnel. HR handle benefit horribly, missing benefit input for new employee, wrong confidential profile information (SSN) entry for existing employee and messy leaving handling for former employee. There is no personal growth and productivity in this university.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace these administrative staff and HR who do nothing but just have been waiting for retirement everyday.

I worked at University of North Carolina part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

People their are extremely nice, always ready to help

    Cons

Not significant international population, most of the people are from NC or nearby states, so not much diversity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To Payroll: Use Glacier online tax compliance system. It's hard for non-residents to know whether or not their county is part of tax treaty or not. Glacier makes this process so much easier.

I worked at University of North Carolina part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and decent pay depending on which department you are working for, good atmosphere as well

    Cons

As with any job, the pay could always be better and it's difficult to know where you stand after applying for a job opening because there is no update on position after the closing date.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer the ability to be updated of open position status

I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Beautiful campus, great fellow faculty, wonderful students.

    Cons

Tend to promote outstanding academics who are clueless with how to lead, manage and serve as the administrator for a program. Another real threat to this great university is a clueless legislature who seem to be singularly focused on gutting the essential funding to primary, secondary and higher education.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Solicit input from your faculty and pay attention to the input.

I have been working at University of North Carolina full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Generous holiday, vacation, and sick time policies.

    Cons

Lack of mid-level managers that have the ability to lead people and manager labor and other resources.
The university does not tend to promote from within or look at the actual talent of staff on site.
Merit raises at the staff level are rare, normally can only hope for a legislative increase.
Higher level/managers have much greater benefits and pay, out of proportion to the talent and capabilities of each.
Demand and work load continue to increase while department resources continue to decrease.
On-the-job training is lacking in many departments.
Carolina Way and Carolina Pride is diminishing for those that live in reality and don't just bleed blue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Substance over form would move the university forward in the right direction. Currently feels like public image is priority.

    Pros

My coworkers are great, and there is a laid back atmosphere at the university.

    Cons

As a TA you will have a hard time making ends meet if you don't live in a modest place and budget wisely, especially if you want to live alone.
