I have been working at University of North Texas part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Gaining invaluable experience for when I become a professor myself, flexible schedule--can work in the office or from home, low stress environment

    Cons

It's not uncommon for a professor to basically dump his/her entire workload on you, leaving you to wonder what exactly they are being paid to do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure the professor are still involved in their classes and connecting with their students. There are some things that are asked of TAs that are not appropriate. Some jobs should be completed by the professor.

I worked at University of North Texas part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great professors that always seemed to take an interest in their Students. Extremely well organized course structure. Hours were very comfortable and pay was great. Coworkers were majoring in the same subject, so we all had something in common

    Cons

Students were often quite difficult to deal with. Many had a lack of fundamental skills necessary to complete their coursework. It was hard to help students that weren't willing to help themselves.

Former Employee - Hall Director in Denton, TX

I worked at University of North Texas full-time for more than a year

    Pros

UNT Housing Dept. has a lot of people who have been in higher ed for a long time and care deeply about students and student development. They consistently incorporate new projects, committees, and projects that challenge and cater to different skill sets. Director is incredibly available, approachable, and a leader I would follow into battle. She is wonderful and so helpful in professionally developing people along their career journey.

    Cons

A lot of people in the Housing department are UNT born and raised, which can make things feel very "we do things this way because we've always done them this way" and can be a hard environment for new-comers to feel welcome. Most of the employees try to work against this, but inside jokes during meetings are somewhat inevitable. Another con is there are people who are, or have been, on staff for a lot longer than they should be, based on inappropriate staff relationships or lack of drive/being completely checked out. Can be draining to work alongside people of either category, and was always frustrating to me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to hire, train, and develop people who care about students and about making a difference. Continue to listen to feedback and give Hall Directors opportunities for professional development but also time in the day to do the jobs they get paid to do. Continue to invest in the students in new ways.

I have been working at University of North Texas full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

State employees have good health benefits and retirement savings. In addition, education is typically encouraged for staff. Tuition scholarships are available and training is encouraged.

    Cons

The leave policies and working schedule are not flexible. Pay is much lower than in the private sector. Administrators are typically out of touch with staff concerns.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider spending less funding on print media and advertising campaigns and offer competitive salaries and upward mobility for staff to encourage growth overall.

I worked at University of North Texas full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Really lovely people to work with and a very supportive and open management. Upper management is very accessible and interested in the needs of their employees.

    Cons

Not surprisingly, being a state institution, the pay is pretty meager. Also as a young driven professional I found that the opportunities for advancement outside of the faculty track (in more administrative roles) was pretty limited. The organization can also be a bit bureaucratic at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities to promote and retain young talent.
