ProsThe people you work with are great

ConsNot much opportunity for advancement. Salary increases are non-existant

Excellent education, but not a fantastic environment

Graduate Student (Current Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsFaculty, research, and classes are of standard or superior quality. There are many extracurricular activities available and lots of support for students. And, one of the big advantages are that with the low cost of living of Oklahoma, your stipend goes a lot farther. In addition, the pace of life allows you more time for family.

ConsMy experience with my specific department (Microbiology and Immunology) has been, at minimum, frustrating. While many of the issues have likely been due to some high turnover within the administrative assistants, not a week goes by without a seminar flier not being mailed out or a similar administrative mistake.
The only other major complaint I have is that the health insurance is only mediocre.

Good place to work but not well funded

Research Assistant (Current Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsGood salary and nice environment. Not stressful in general.

Conshard to get a grant or be funded, makes it difficult to perform research. Most PIs do not seek collaborations outside the University of Oklahoma.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to seek collaborations more aggressively.

    Hard work, but good experience

Research Assistant (Former Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsWas a great place to get some research experience and learn more about how graduate research works as an undergrad. I also got training using certain computer software like MATLAB. Got to work in a variety of things, like animal testing, human testing, and data analysis.

ConsHard work, requiring me to juggle a few different projects at once. Had to sometimes guess which projects were most important to finish first.

    Working at OUHSC

Research Assistant (Former Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsGenerally a good place to work but at the time I was there the government funding of grants was becoming untenable and research was slowing down to the point there was no work to do. The best thing I can say about OUHSC is that the people you work with are very supportive.

ConsOftentimes due to budget and or grant constraints you can become stuck in one position and not have any or many opportunities to advance.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your staff and employees. Loosen up on funding opportunities.
