    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at University of Ottawa full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable - mostly, rarely is anyone ever laid off.

    Cons

poor advancement opportunities - unless politically connected.

    Advice to Management

I think many of the management are self-serving and lack client focus ( students are the clients).

    Pros

Working with intelligent people, great benefits and a beautiful campus to work in.

    Cons

A culture of nepotism + low pay = very mediocre management and senior staff

    Advice to Management

Start hiring leaders who are interested in collective goals for the institution instead of your golf buddies

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at University of Ottawa full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Centrally located, Decent physical facilities, opportunity to learn English or French as a second language

    Cons

Biligualism acts as an obstacle for professional growth. Most gatekeeper staff is French and despite their ability to help everyone, response time is slower if you can't communicate with them in French.

    Advice to Management

Consider the need for bilingualism on a case-by-case basis.

  8. Part TIme Professor

I have been working at University of Ottawa part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good facilities for teaching, including WiFI and wired classroom. Good student body, that seems engaged.

    Cons

The administration seems to take professors, especially part-time professors for granted. They expect the part-time professors to do much organization and scheduling and do not seem to respect that these individuals have full-time jobs. As a whole, the administration seems to favour French as the language of choice so English speaking profs seem at a disadvantage. The reliance on web based email is also frustrating.

    Cons

Parking is expensive and not included in salary. No advancement possibilities unless you are bilingual

I have been working at University of Ottawa part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits Very good for family life Continuous Improvement

    Cons

Lots of regulations Takes time for project to be done because of dense administrative structure

  11. Research assistant

    Pros

The management team and administrative staff are all very nice. However, for the research assistant job, the experience really depends on your thesis supervisor. Some professors are really helpful and understanding. It gives you valuable experience. If you only take courses, it is difficult to find a good job after graduation.

    Cons

For master's student, course-based usually takes less time than thesis-based. We have to stay in lab during summer. Some professors will not allow students to get an internship. If you still want an internship, it may takes you at least 2.5-3 years to graduate. In my opinion, internship experience is more important for finding jobs than RA.

    Advice to Management

Management is fine. It is difficult to take actions to some terrible professors.
