Tough times everywhere, doing the best they can in the current environment

Assistant Professor, Tenure Track (Current Employee)
Philadelphia, PA

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat resources. Fewer silos than other places of comparable NIH funding. Pretty open and collaborative.

ConsLike all places with tenure, you are subject to binary decision making on tenure. Tenure is unnecessarily difficult process full of ambiguity.

Turning into a stepping stone rather than a destination during early to mid career, but filling upper ranks with established members. The latter is good for stemming losses and a win-win for parties involved. Not much choice with ever diminishing revenue nationwide

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter connections to industry. Allow people to move other department and school pre tenure due to changes in leadership, research objectives, and simply quality of fit.

Philadelphia, PA

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania part-time for more than a year

ProsAbility to do homework while on the job
Friendly staff
Work location that is close to where I live
Flexibility in setting up initial work schedule

ConsSince my overall school schedule is pretty intense, it would be optimal to have more flexibility in changing my hours on a week to week basis. However, I acknowledge that this is an expectation that is pretty unrealistic.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement does well.
