Pros
I am doing part-time research assistant, at Dept. of Computer and Information Science, school of engineering and applied science, PRECISE center
Cons
tuition is expensive. philadelphia some times is cold. but to day is warm. summer is hot, not a good place to live
Advice to Senior Management
not really, good place to study to live. campus is nice, professors are nice. just too many students enrolled, so every class is full
Pros
Looks good on PhD applications
Extremely smart people
Great academic resources
Cheap, fun city
Great athetic facilities
AWESOME food nearby
Cons
Everyone is super busy, lack of real mentorship
lowish pay
Philadelphia has generally shitty weather during the winter (November through April)
Advice to Senior Management
University of Penn is awesome, I am grateful for the time I have been allowed to work here and it has been what I needed right out of college. Thank you very much for the system you have.
Pros
The educational benefits are wonderful, there are many opportunities for growth and professional development, senior management cares about the faculty and staff.
Cons
The campus is located in an urban section of the city. The health care benefits are costly, and if you pay more out of pocket expenses if you are not treated at UPHS.
Advice to Senior Management
The employees should not have to incure more out of pocket expenses if they choose to be treated outside of UPHS health system.
Pros
Large research facility
A lot of resources/equipment to pursue research endeavors
Cons
Pay
paid on a monthly basis
Pros
Good benefits, nice people, good working environment
Cons
not easy to get promotion
Pros
Personal/career growth for employees. Option to take classes and pursue a degree at a highly ranked institution. Great health benefits for all employees.
Cons
No major negatives, there is a slight disconnect between PIs and staff but that is on a case by case basis.
Advice to Senior Management
Better overall communication with staff, particularly regarding staff changes and work related decisions that effect the staff (need for effective communication).
Pros
Benefits of the health system
Cons
Difficult to obtain grants, research lacks funding
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Very good tuition benefits, decent health insurance, flexible schedules, generous PTO, work-life balance, mentoring and professional development opportunities, chance to work with intelligent people
Cons
Lower pay than industry, limited opportunities for advancement in my field, bureaucracy and politics sometimes get in the way, annual "merit increases" to pay barely cover cost of living, difficult to get a significant raise.
Advice to Senior Management
More transparency in the systems would be helpful. Sometimes something as seemingly simple as ordering supplies gets overly complicated between finding the correct person to talk to, an approved vendor and so on.
Pros
Great work/life balance, excellent benefits; great facilities; people are excellent to work with; free tuition for your kids; great energy on campus.
Cons
Parking is expensive; commute can be long depending on where you live; take a while to get hired- process long
Advice to Senior Management
Make hiring process take a shorter amount of time; require departments to encourage employees to work at home when possible;
Pros
Name of school/hospital
Range of therapeutic options available for patients
Research
Cons
Job satisfaction dependent in specific specialty
Floor specific nursing that can't/wont place IV's
High ancillary staff turnover
Hit or miss phlebotomy
Big brother policies
Advice to Senior Management
Overall good implementation of hospital care however still has bureaucracy that can make resident life difficult
