I have been working at University of Pennsylvania Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Penn has excellent benefits and good pay. Its easy to transfer out of a department and move on to another area. The location is great and accessible to several forms of public transportation

    Cons

depending on the dept sometimes there are unfair practices such as some people not pulling their weight, parking isnt great. You have to either come very early and park a few blocks away and walk or park in a lot where you could pay upwards of $20 per day. Also the politics here are really crazy at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

i think you should offer raises based on your performance eval and not give everyone the same thing across that board. I also think great employees who go above and beyond should get some type of reward for their hard work. it doesnt have to be monitary but something just to say hey we notice that you are doing an excellent job and we appreciate you

Terrible place to work. Some of the management bullies contractors.

I have been working at University of Pennsylvania Health System as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Learn some new skills. Coworkers are usually nice.

    Cons

My manager said very negative things about employees to other employees, and tries to make people productive by competing them against each other. Poor at giving feedback, and seemed to forget their original software requests after taking long vacations. First week I tried to get access to their trouble ticket system, and I was yelled at. (Thought that the manager was just having "one" bad day...)

Also lied about firing the contractor before me, who was only there four months. If your offered a temporary to permanent contract position, be very careful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to get respectful people in management positions. Need to get rid of some of the current management. Not all are bad, but everybody knows who the bad ones are.

I worked at University of Pennsylvania Health System as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

The workplace was an amazing environment to work in. There was no shortage of projects or tasks to keep yourself busy. The staff was very accepting of my experience level and were eager to teach me all of the software needed to perform my research. Also, all of the other interns, graduate students, and other post-docs were very nice.

    Cons

At times, clinical responsibilities of the professional staff would interfere with possible research issues and it would be some time before they get resolved.
