I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I am encouraged to conduct high quality research and engage in research driven teaching and given the resources I need to do so. As a mother of a young family, I have found my colleagues and managers to be supportive and flexible. And I love the new health initiatives which provide opportunities to stay fit.

    Cons

We are under pressure to lower our entrance standards, which would only damage up reputation and require us to admit students who are not able to complete our courses. We have managed to argue for keeping our standards but this is only one programme.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep our standards high! We want to attract the best students.

I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Good support system, excellent union.

    Cons

Resources are limited depending on research group. For example if your lab doesn't have a certain equipment you want to use, the process of applying for the funding to get one or even borrow one is ridiculous.

I have been working at University of Sheffield part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Working in an environment which is buzzing with energy helps to keep stress under control, working for the university is an ideal opportunity to learn practical skills alongside your academic degree. The university is also very flexible and allows a considerable amount of freedom in the way I work. Being employed by the university has also offered me an insight into how various departments of university work together. My work at university as a vacation project assistant has enhanced my communication skills, which I need in my day to day life as a journalism student and as an aspiring journalist.

    Cons

As a project assistant, I rarely came in contact with my boss, and although I enjoyed the fun aspects of the job of assisting on events for mostly International students, I would have liked more feedback about what worked, what could be improved, etc. But really, my boss is lovely and she appreciates the way we lead the vacation projects, so this is not a very big problem.

I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Particularly highly ranked in engineering, with lots of investment in this area for future students. Good quality lectures, so many societies and clubs that you will never be bored, and plenty of great nights out to be had in Sheffield. Also a pretty cheap city.

    Cons

Sheffield is hilly so if you are lazy that might be an issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fantastic camaraderie. Its in one of the best cities in the UK. It has great amenities all around it. They try their best to keep you employed.

    Cons

Some of the departments do not seem to have any idea a whole University exists outside themselves. But the biggest disappointment is SAP. I hate SAP.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get certain departments (finance and procurement for example) to talk to each other. Also let people get on with their jobs instead of endless paperwork and staff surveys.
