I have been working at University of Sheffield (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly and helpful colleagues, flexible working pattern, Work life balance, Great learning opportunities.

    Cons

Contract system so you don't have security of job. once you start with contract job, you have no guaranty of getting open ended continuous contract which is nuisance. they will keep renewing contract for months time only. It is disappointing that after working so long and putting your hard work, your employer does not consider to give you a permanent contract.
Poor management. lack of communication. Salary (No reward or recognition for work you do)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your employees. staff of University work hard every day to add value to University's business.

I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The University is a fairly relaxed place to work, but sometimes too relaxed and the pace of change can get a bit on the slow side.

    Cons

There isn't much scope for advancement once you reach a certain level and all the positions above yours require you to move into management.

I worked at University of Sheffield as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great staff to work with, supported with very knowledgeable supervisors. Had freedom to research effectively, very flexible on working hours.

    Cons

A bit OTT on health and safety. They do everything by the book, or it is not done. A lot of stopping and starting, very slow to get things done. I would advise not to get frustrated, Just go with the flow..

I have been working at University of Sheffield full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

I am encouraged to conduct high quality research and engage in research driven teaching and given the resources I need to do so. As a mother of a young family, I have found my colleagues and managers to be supportive and flexible. And I love the new health initiatives which provide opportunities to stay fit.

    Cons

We are under pressure to lower our entrance standards, which would only damage up reputation and require us to admit students who are not able to complete our courses. We have managed to argue for keeping our standards but this is only one programme.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep our standards high! We want to attract the best students.
