I worked at University of Southern Mississippi part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

School environment very relaxed, but professional at the same time.

    Cons

Although the university is a very pro-research environment, for some reason their innovative research being conducted every day is not advertised as much as one would expect.

I worked at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Offered many opportunities for outside training and allowed full-time employees to take two free classes per semester.

    Cons

Compensation was way below market, even for a government agency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more rewards for great performance.

I worked at University of Southern Mississippi

    Pros

Relaxed and self-paced work opportunity, low expense location but yet close to major interstates, not much competition waiting out there to kill you

    Cons

Lack of academic freedom, (relatively) low pay, you are an outsider unless you belong to the belt.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It has overall nice campus, very friendly staff and faculty, nice gym, community center for students, and on campus cafetaria.

    Cons

Departments except polymer science has more or less no industry connection. So, it is hard to network with industry people. Library do not have subscriptions to many upper tier journals.

    Pros

People are friendly and weather is warm, enjoy the strong sports culture, very beautiful campus, right-sized city, cheap place to live

    Cons

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Holiday schedule is nice and the tuition scholarship for faculty/staff is beneficial if you want more education

    Cons

Management does not support using the education benefit. LOW PAY. Dead end jobs unless you have the right last name/connections to the administration. Poor health insurance. Raises are not an option so good work ethic goes unnoticed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees! Communicate with us and be a leader.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Time off for holidays and the opportunity to take 6 hours/ semester for free.

    Cons

Where do I start? Insurance is horrible (statewide issue), salaries and pay should be reviewed as many who are qualified and deserving are grossly underpaid and many who are less qualified are overpaid. The morale in my department is at an all time low because most of us feel like we do not have anyone to support us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to listen to staff and work to increase morale.

  9. Solid job but benefits need improvement

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Collegiality among colleagues is nice.

    Cons

Health Insurance but this is not a problem specific to this campus. The insurance statewide for state employees is pretty awful and ridiculously expensive.

  10. USM Gulf Coast is a beautiful campus on the Missississippi Gulf Coast.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The coast faculty are collegial and work together for a common goal. Dedicated and love their jobs.

    Cons

Big divide between coast campus and the main campus in Hattiesburg. Not enough resources dedicated to this growing campus on the coast compared to Hattiesburg.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest time, money, and effort where your growth is - the Gulf Coast. Truly grow the coast and don't stifle it.

I have been working at University of Southern Mississippi part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Since most employees have been there for years (decades for many) there is a strong family atmosphere. It seems that most employees genuinely enjoy their work, the patients, and the university setting.

    Cons

Sometimes employees are too relaxed which can make their behavior seem less than professional at times. Also, pay could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make high standards for excellence and stick to them.
