Good employer, friendly people, good salary

    IAESTE Trainee (Former Employee)
    Glasgow, Scotland (UK)

ProsI was very satisfied with the staff, everyone was friendly, open and helpful, all of the technical problems were solved immediately. Flexible hours to work, I could even work from home, the most important is to meet the deadlines. Each trainee got tasks, that fit best to his personality. We got very good salary and help in every issue.

ConsThere were no downsides, i was totally satisfied.

University of Strathclyde as a PhD student employer

    PhD Student (Current Employee)
    Glasgow, Scotland (UK)

ProsGood environment overall. The university or the societies that belong to it or the SIPBS institute are interested in making the adaptation easy and provide a good international exchange between students at a social and professional/ research level. Stipends and demonstration salaries always payed on time.

ConsThe registration process to the university can be quite bureaucratic making the start for students at times difficult. The university has several departments and the SIPBS itself has a lot of administrators and dealing with all those people and knowing who to go to to take care of a problem can be at times tricky.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake the registration process and services in general less bureaucratic and more straight forward.

Great opportunities, once you're on file.

    Researcher - DMEM (Current Employee)
    Glasgow, Scotland (UK)

ProsGood opportunities for an internal candidate, there are lots of areas/projects which you can and will be asked to help out on which can then lead into other job roles. This makes for a stimulating and flexible working environment and even if only taken on for a set period this means that often the contract is extended to a full time basis, or another opportunity appears.

ConsHR can be a little on the slow side with the initial paperwork but this was mitigated to a certain degree in my case by their flexibility.

    Good place to study

    PhD Student (Current Employee)
    Glasgow, Scotland (UK)

ProsIt is a nice place to work if you find the right group.
The support staff is really nice and helpful.
Some very good science is done.
Despite what most of the people say Glasgow is a nice place to live (if you avoid the east end).
The beautiful sceneries of Scotland are just outside your door.

ConsSome groups can get overwhelmed with PhD students and the more senior staff swamped with work trying to help them get data.
Some of the senior people in the physics department look like they haven't been out of their lab in ages, which is a bit depressing. The physics dept lack a feeling of community, people tend to have limited interactions apart from when work is involved.
The facilities are quite old, buildings build in the 70's and full of asbestos. But apparently there are plans to build new buildings and knocked down the old ones in a couples of years.
The weather can be horrendous, but you would expect that in Scotland.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is not because you plan on demolishing a building that you should let it fall in disrepair, a heater that blows cold air in the middle of a Scottish winter is not really acceptable...
