I worked at University of Sussex full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A reasonable research institution within easy reach of London. The campus is quite nice. The eating facilities are good for a university canteen.

    Cons

The campus is out of town. Some of the buildings are a bit tatty. Need more research funding.

I worked at University of Sussex part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly, good pay, understanding towards family events and personal
    Circumstances. Overall very enjoyable.

    Good lunch options

    Cons

Pay was previously paid weekly and now is monthly, which is annoying, especially if you miss the deadline for that month. It can feel like forever to get paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the system of pay back
To the previous system. Other than that I was extremely good. The managers were friendly and welcoming.

I have been working at University of Sussex

    Pros

Friendly people at the genome centre.

    Cons

Whilst I was told I would receive my reimbursed funds in a week, in fact it is an indefinite process. When mailing and phoning, staff puts the blame on you with a wide range of excuses including 'wrong information provided', 'just found your envelope in the post (after one month)'. I find this unacceptable for such a university. It makes people wonder whether academics will get paid their salary on time. I was treated with utter disrespect and ignorance by staff from the payments office and have - up till now - not received my funds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe just restructure the whole department and recruit people who actually care? Saves coffee and cookies.

    Pros

Pleasant environment. Generally quiet and ideal for undertaking research.

    Cons

My manager had unreasonable expectations of what could be achieved given the relatively short duration of the project. This meant working extremely long hours. On-campus food is terrible. Little to no time or incentive for personal development and personal projects.

    Pros

Decent middle managers, good terms and conditions. Excellent time off, Okay wages.

    Cons

Lot of posts outsourced so now a bit rubbish. Low moral. Some workers there a long time and are comfortable and entrenched

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at University of Sussex full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good academic community, close student-staff relationship, campus in beautiful natural setting.

    Cons

Aggressive and dishonest management, lack of support for academics, lack of academic freedom, bloated administration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please engage with academics, admit your failure - financial as well as academic management, return to the original values of Sussex - that will make Sussex proud again.
