I have been working at University of Sydney as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Stimulating work, great levels of freedom.

    Cons

Remuneration is less than in comparable industry positions, and with heavy-weight bureaucracy. Many junior positions are casual (as is the case in academia). The cumulative effect is that they lose good people, and hence commercialisation opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Turn from a "how can't we make this work" organisation into a "how can we make this work" organisation.

I worked at University of Sydney

    Pros

I worked there part time while I did my PhD. Good pay, and access to many top researchers in the world

    Cons

In university, you need to pursue a research life. Otherwise, it is very hard to have an improve in career.

I worked at University of Sydney full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Academics generally agree that universities can be difficult places to work these days. While Australian higher education, like elsewhere, is also succumbing to the quantification of research outputs, its universities still generally offer good working conditions. Throughout my three years there I felt supported by my department and school. As a junior scholar I was given a reduced teaching load, in recognition of the fact that it takes time to develop courses. The pay is excellent and the location of the main campus is beautiful.

    Cons

The cons are the same as with any university: getting ahead as a junior (or senior!) scholar requires working six or seven days per week.
