I worked at University of The South as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    Generally friendly people
Hours are extremely reasonable, especially during summer
    Plenty of work-life balance
Beautiful campus and surrounding area (especially if you like outdoor activities)
Many positions that open up seem to be filled by current employees, so there's plenty of opportunity to move into a new role, if you wait long enough.

    Cons

There's a fair amount of academic bureaucracy, so decisions can be slow and convoluted
Laid back pace sometimes stifles innovation, but that goes along with working in most university settings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut down on the bureaucracy and focus on the student experience.

I worked at University of The South part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Small community of folks who will often greet you by name.
    Beautiful town.
University seems to be constantly improving infrastructure.
Free classes for some full-time employees.

    Cons

A great many of the people in the town hold the same views on a number of subjects, disagree and you might find yourself ostracized.
Pay is on the low, low end of norm relative to the job.
Not much housing in the area and what is available is grossly overpriced.
Students are treated like gold, often to the demise of staff members.
Upper "management" who will listen to problems you've encountered and not bother to do anything about them.
Human Resources department leadership lacks the ability to function.
Racial undertones still exist in many realms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your staff members like you actually want them to stay and advance!

I worked at University of The South full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people, wonderful community, and educated students. The benefits are good and the British architecture makes it a visually pleasing place to work.

    Cons

The leadership can be scattered and few have any degrees or experience in business. This is an academic setting and the business functions reflect that atmosphere. There is certainly room to grow but change cannot happen from lower or middle management. Also, pay is low but the cost of living is low as well.

I worked at University of The South as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

Great opportunities to get involved with community, dogs everywhere, coworkers are great, campus is absolutely beautiful, everyone seems to really love the university as a whole, great community

    Cons

HR doesn't always treat their employees fair when it comes to renewing contracts, opportunities for growth are limited if you don't want to adhere to staff politics

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat your employees fairly, don't always take someone elses word against an employee, actually investigate the situation as a whole
