I have been working at University of Twente as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

Scientific and financial freedom to explore the directions that you want in a project
Freedom to choose the courses, conferences, trainings you want to take
Less strict supervision(depends on advisor&group leader)

    Cons

You should consider where you fit in a group and who you will collaborate with. If you are part of an individual project it can be difficult to get feedback and solve problems that are maybe easy if you work in a relevant group.

I worked at University of Twente full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

+ Goodf acilities (sports, accomodation, IT Infrastructure)
+ Overall helpful and friendly people
+ Abundant travel opportunities (depending on the group you work in)

    Cons

    - Many advisors of so-so quality, and some stars, take your time to pick the right one
    - Some groups have high number of Dutch people, some have an International mix, these both have pros/cons
    - Some groups have a cooperative character (PhD students encouraged to work together), some have a more individualistic culture. Though, the emphasis is mostly on the latter. Be careful not to end up working to much on your own
    - Organisation can be overly bureaucratic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time and money on ambitious projects (buildings, etc), and more on supporting the staff.

I worked at University of Twente full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

If you prefer a nice working environment for your graduate study (Ph.D), University of Twente is a fine place. Work load and scientific requirements are at acceptable levels so that you can maintain a good work/life balance.

    Cons

Compared to the best research universities in Europe, University of Twente lacks motivation to be at the higher ranks in terms of scientific research quality.

University is located in between two small towns (Enschede and Hengelo) which sometimes lead to unsatisfactory social life.
