I worked at University of Waterloo part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I was offered the position because I was a masters student, pretty flexible hours and not too demanding, gained a lot of experience working in conjunction with undergraduate students

    Cons

I think the pay was a bit low for a TA in comparsion to other TA positions available at other schools, we didn't really get any training and were just expected to get right into it, we didn't get any formal feedback either

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

should prepare TAs more to teach undergrad students.

I have been working at University of Waterloo full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It's like a small city. You can work in student focused roles, support positions, Athletics, retail, foodservice. It's fantastic for people with varied career interests
Campus has everything you would want at a job location (food, gym, bank, healthcare etc)
    Generous Defined Benefit Pension Plan
Free tuition for staff, discounted tuition for dependents of staff
    job security

    Cons

Salaries are typical of public-sector roles, below what you could make outside
Things can move at a pretty slow pace, things are discussed in a very collaborative manner before decisions are made

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to train your Managers on leadership skills

I worked at University of Waterloo as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Learned a pretty good amount. I had a lot of flexibility to choose my own projects, choose my own technologies, etc.

    Cons

I didn't have a whole lot of work to do. I often had to create work to do myself. If you aren't motivated and don't take initiative, you may be bored very often.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more work to the employees.

I worked at University of Waterloo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Easy work, high pay for doing little and little oversight.

    Cons

Faculty and management are weak and support their weakness. Boring and lame city with little to do. Lots of bragging about the past but little of that translates to your undergraduate, graduate or staff experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to be the big kids on the block, you are a mid-level school at best. Success in computer and electrical engineering is not transferred to the rest of the school, recognize that please. The school is average at best with the exceptional math and computer engineering, don't forget they hold up the rest of the school. Stop bragging and actually try to be good at what you do.
