I have been working at University of Waterloo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The most I like about this job is the freedom of work and its scope. The salary is ok to sustain a family. Administrative overhead/interaction is minimal except for the time of contract renewal.

    Cons

The job is very demanding resulting into a poor work/life balance. Since it is a yearly contract job, there is a constant pressure for finding a more stable position.

I worked at University of Waterloo as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Lots of training and professional development opportunities. My position was tied to being a student, however, so my hours were limited as were my prospects for advancement.

    Cons

As only a part time position, I found no cons in work-life balance or time off policies.

I have been working at University of Waterloo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Its great to work with professionals who are leaders in their field, and learn a lot as a result. The flexibility is excellent in terms of achieving a work- life balance.

    Cons

It can be fast paced, stressful environment at times. People tend to work in silos at times. There are limited opportunities for actual advancement within the department, thereby causing good people to look elsewhere eventually.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be ideal to diminish the division between faculty and staff.

I have been working at University of Waterloo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Co-op is a big plus. Employers include Google, Microsoft, IBM, Pinterest, Facebook among many other less-know companies. The studies are challenging and require time and dedication.

    Cons

There is less time for self-learning technologies and a lot of stuff that we are taught in first and second year includes topics like Kinematics, Chemistry, Linear Circuits which might are usually not directly useful or related to software engineering. These are bare minimum subjects to call "software engineering" an "engineering degree. Thus, time is consumed learning things which are not needed for jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the program more CS related than have so many extraneous things to learn. I understand problem solving ability improvement is important but that can be inculcated through CS related courses as well.
