I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison part-time

    Pros

The environment fosters learning new skill sets all of the time and I have the freedom to do my own work. I was able to take new directions for my research project whenever I felt there was an interesting opportunity.

    Cons

For anyone looking to go into Biomedical Engineering, it seems as though the department is geared heavily toward tissue engineering and cell culture as opposed to medical devices and biomechanics.

    Advice to Management

I would say that everything is great and I have been pleased with how open minded my advisor has been.

    Pros

Great environment, you work with fellow students and get experience with basic life skills.

    Cons

Not very flexible scheduling and management can be difficult at times. It's hard to get time off without penalty.

    Advice to Management

Make a better system for scheduling employees or be more flexible with allowing time off when needed.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time

    Pros

Generous PTO and health care options. Full-time employees are given a lot of flexibility with their schedules depending on their jobs, which is great if you have a family or non-traditional project work.

    Cons

Extremely bureaucratic, which is to be expected with universities. It's hard to make decisions in your job without getting approval from a long line of successive managers and directors. State is currently fighting against the school, resulting in budget cuts and layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Allow employees to have greater agency and empower them to do the job you hired them to do without getting permission for every decision they need to make.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The infrastructure is solid and the administration works well. The campus community and atmosphere are good. Benefits are good for now.

    Cons

Recent funding cuts mean that benefits are projected to get worse. Compensation is not great, not surprising at a public school.

    Advice to Management

Principal investigators should have more influence on the salary of their employees. The recently proposed medical insurance plan is insufficient.
