I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work with lots of amazing research and learning taking place. Many opportunities to take advantage of on campus events. A good culture, but more in tune with Badger athletics than working at UW Madison.

    Cons

Being at the whim of the state legislature/governor. Unclear future for a top notch flagship university. No real career path for administrative staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management is working on a number of fronts - employee engagement initiatives; career path redesign; improving inclusion and diversity in the workforce. however, everytime gains are made, the legislature steps in and takes more funding away. it makes it almost impossible to work here.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Pros

There are a lot of positives about working at UW-Madison. There is a low-cost of living and very welcoming place to live. One of the greatest things is that so many graduate students have external hobbies outside of lab and it is encouraged by many of the grad school. Many of the researchers are eager to mentor new graduate students. With a plethora of interesting cutting edge projects and world class researchers, this is a great place to be trained as a scientist

    Cons

This is a very large open university and many of the research buildings are spread out. One of the biggest down fall is the large partying/drinking culture surrounding UW-Madison. Sometimes you can feel left out if you do not drink in excess or like a undergrad. Also because of current state budget cuts by Scott Walker in the last two years, we have seen a decrease in stipends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The school needs to try to work on diversity and directly addressing the issue involving the concerns of the minorities. Many times management issues statements that appear passive.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Pros

Beautiful campus, welcoming community, progressing environment, surrounded by people wanting to learn, very collaborative work atmosphere, great networking opportunities.

    Cons

Winter. Honestly, I can't think of much else. Sometimes politics makes things challenging here but overall I couldn't ask for a better place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek out networking opportunities and build relationships. UW has so much to offer but on such a big campus, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Don't let that be you!
