I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great coworkers with amazing attitudes and work ethics. The benefits we receive are very good. It can be easy to get your foot in the door by taking a state test or accepting an LTE position.

    Cons

The pay is lower than it would be if you worked in private industry. Hard to impossible to negotiate what you are paid if you are a Classified employee. Hard to advance, even if your department wants you to, the system makes it nearly impossible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it easier to transition into new roles. It should not take nearly a year to get the raise I was promised by taking on additional job duties.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment. Many useful seminars, flexibility in terms of work schedule. Good location to live. Many different kind of restaurants, good bus system, and safe environment. Good place to advance personally and professionally. Also, good health care system.

    Cons

"blur" working schedule. Sometimes you need to work on weekend and night. Need to be organized so that you can prioritize what is important and what is not.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Pros

Ok city, but not so great place for minorities or big city folk. World class research, though.

    Cons

Grad students as a rule don't have great work-life balance, or pay.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Many of the labs are at the top of the field, but without the pretense of a number of other top-10 schools. Understanding, friendly faculty, staff, and peers. Recruiters come to this campus to draw from new talent pools. Makes the job search much less stressful.

    Cons

No different from any other grad school experience. You have to be willing to cope with many months of failure. You have to be very self-motivated. Etc.
