I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Pros

I had flexibility in my weekly schedule. Had a chance to do a lot of networking within campus and work in lots of collaborative projects. The Faculty in the department are all very well known for in their field of research. Lots of funding opportunities, good industrial connections.

    Cons

Very competitive work environment and lower graduate researcher wages compared to other institutions.

I have been working at University of Wisconsin-Madison full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Huge research campus, lots of resources, big community, great town. A lot of your experience will vary from lab to lab, department to department - my lab focuses on ambitious, high profile work, competitive funding, etc. Good career training.

    Cons

It takes a lot of commitment - I commonly put in 60-70 hour weeks, and working every day of the week (and weekend) is expected. I imagine that more relaxed research environments exist at UW, but my lab is not one of them. This is good for my career, but probably sub-optimal for my short-term mental health.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Segregated fees for graduate students are getting to be unreasonably high.
